Mariners’ Cole Young breaks Ken Griffey Jr.’s Seattle franchise record

If you were putting money on a Seattle Mariners player to break a Ken Griffey Jr. record, you probably wouldn’t have pointed at Cole Young.

But welcome to August 2025 — that’s exactly what Young just did.

The record has to do with age, which is how the rookie Young had a chance to do this.

On Saturday, Young walked four times.

Griffey Jr. held the previous record for youngest Seattle player to walk four times in a game, at 23 years, 189 days old.

Young did it at 22 years and 11 days old, shattering the mark, per Mariners PR.

The promising infielder has just been so-so early in his MLB career. He’s batting .253 with a .341 on-base percentage after the four-walk game.

But this is a sign that Young is seeing the ball well and starting to feel comfortable in the batter’s box in Major League Baseball.

Young’s record performance comes in the midst of an incredible Seattle run. They’ve won eight of their last 10 games, having hit 20 homers and stolen 20 bases in that stretch without being caught stealing, an MLB record.

Add in Young’s performance, and a heating up Cal Raleigh, and a suddenly speedy Josh Naylor, and things are looking very, very good for the Mariners. They’re only a half-game back of the Astros in the AL West.

Everything Seattle has wanted to go right in the second half and after the trade deadline has gone just as they’ve hoped. Fans in the Pacific Northwest will hope it all keeps going according to plan.
