Mariners’ Cal Raleigh ties Mickey Mantle’s historic MLB switch-hitting record

It may have flown a bit under the radar on an NFL Sunday afternoon.

But hopefully fans of the Seattle Seahawks had switched their channels over just in time to see Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh make MLB history.

In Raleigh’s first at bat Sunday in Seattle, the switch-hitting slugger stepped to the plate from the left side.

He got a pitch on the outer half and blasted it the other way.

Because it’s Raleigh, and because this is a season all about him, the ball had plenty of carry.

Home run, opposite field, No. 54 on the season for Raleigh.

And with that, Raleigh tied Mickey Mantle on the top of the all-time switch-hitter home run leaderboard for a single season.

Mantle hit 54 in 1961. Raleigh now has 54, with a couple weeks to go, in 2025.

There have been so few seasons in baseball history like the one Raleigh is having. He hasn’t hit for as much average in the second half, which has his AL MVP candidacy in at least a little bit of question.

But he’s a stud defensive catcher, and he even steals bases.

And soon, Raleigh will have a chance to surpass Mantle’s mark and have the most prodigious power-hitting season by a switch-hitter ever.

That’s special, even if you missed it initially because football was on your TV.
