Mariners’ Cal Raleigh joins historic list with Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez as MVP comes into play

Cal Raleigh is in exclusive company.

On Saturday night, the Seattle Mariners’ superstar catcher slugged his 40th home run of the season.

He’s only the fifth player in Mariners history to reach 40 homers in one campaign.

The other four:

  • Ken Griffey Jr.
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Jay Buhner
  • Nelson Cruz

Griffey accomplished the feat six times in a Seattle uniform.

A-Rod, Buhner and Cruz all did it thrice for the Mariners.

Raleigh’s previous career-high in home runs was 34.

It’s not even the end of July, and he’s already at 40.

The homer also came at a key time, snapping Raleigh out of a bit of a funk and also propelling him further into the MLB lead.

With Yankees superstar Aaron Judge hitting the IL (right elbow), Raleigh has a chance to make a run at the American League MVP award.

The wider he can make his home run gap from Judge, and if he can potentially make a run at the AL-record 62, the better chance he’ll have of taking home that prestigious honor.
