Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner makes free agency announcement after playoff loss

There are many questions about what the Toronto Maple Leafs will do with Mitch Marner and some of their other top players, as it looks like things might’ve finally come to an end on Sunday night.

Losing 6-1 in the second round of the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Florida Panthers, there isn’t much of a reason for the Maple Leafs to continue running this core back.

That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t keep Marner in a Maple Leafs jersey if there’s a scenario where they could sign him, but there will be some tough decisions made in the next few months.

When speaking about his future after he struggled in the postseason to meet his standards again, Marner spoke as if he’s ready to move on, saying he never took a day for granted, and he was thankful that they took a chance on him.

“It meant everything,” he said, per The Athletic. “(They) took maybe a risky pick on a small kid from Toronto and I’ve been forever grateful to be able to wear this Maple Leaf, and be a part of some of the great legends here and be able to wear this jersey.

“So never taken a day for granted, and I always loved it.

If this is the end of Marner’s time in Toronto, it’s been an excellent career for both sides. While they didn’t ultimately win a Stanley Cup, which was the goal, there were many other great moments.

It’s unfortunate that things went the way they have in the postseason for this organization throughout much of its existence, but this has been an issue far before Marner was there.

Marner is a talented player, and there isn’t any debate that every team around the league would love to have them.
