Auston Matthews’ personal history capped off a historic night for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On Tuesday, the Maple Leafs cruised to a 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres, and in the process, two historic marks were reached.
The first was for the team: Toronto won the Atlantic Division, just its third division title since 1967.
The Maple Leafs set up a first-round playoff matchup with Ottawa in the Battle of Ontario.
Matthews scored the final goal of the night, an empty-netter that won’t go anywhere near his personal highlight reel.
But it meant much more. It was the 400th goal of Matthews’ career.

Only one prior Maple Leafs player had ever reached 400 goals: Mats Sundin.
Sundin is Toronto’s all-time goal scorer with 420 goals, well within Matthews’ reach early next season.
Those 420 goals came in 981 games for Sundin. It has taken Matthews 628 games to get to 400.
Toronto has one more regular season game remaining, Thursday night against Detroit, before getting into its postseason series with Ottawa. The Maple Leafs will head into the rest of the week riding high off a historic Tuesday night.
