Manchester United exploring a free transfer of German defender amid interest from Spain

Manchester United will go through an overhaul this summer under manager Ruben Amorim as the Portuguese is not happy with players in multiple positions.

They have struggled to score goals consistently whilst being pretty leaky in defence. So they need players at both ends of the field. Among multiple options shortlisted, there’s a specific player who has caught Amorim’s eye.

It is none other than Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah. The 29-year-old robust German defender’s will run out of contract in June this year and will potentially leave Leverkusen to try out a new challenge.

As per reports on Sky Sports, Manchester United are exploring the opportunity to sign the experienced defender on a free transfer. He could be a great option for the Red Devils as they look to overturn their fortunes in the Premier League next season.

Tah, who has played at the highest level with club and country, has attracted interest from clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. All three clubs understand the value that the 29-year-old brings to the table.

His physicality, explosiveness, coupled with a calm and composed demeanour, has helped Bayer Leverkusen for several years. He was also an integral part of Xabi Alonso’s team that went unbeaten in clinching the domestic double in Germany.

Where will Jonathan Tah end up this summer?

Tah is all set to leave Leverkusen this summer and he has already informed the club about his decision. After Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw against St Pauli on April 20, he also cleared the air to the reporters. “To be honest, I don’t have a timeframe. But the club knows about it. And it’s been the same as it has been all along,” he said.

Bayern Munich have been chasing his signature since the January transfer window. While they reached an agreement with the player, they couldn’t agree to terms with Leverkusen.

Recently, given his contract situation, Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are also monitoring the situation. The entire dynamics of the transfer will change if Alonso moves to Real Madrid as their new manager.

The Spaniard is potentially the favourite to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. So if the deal happens, there are reports that Alonso has demanded for three players at the Spanish capital. The 29-year-old defender is one of them.

Similarly, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is also an admirer of the sturdy German centre-back and considering it’s a free transfer, there’s a possibility that Tah may end up in Camp Nou.
