Manchester United are expected to complete the signing of Benjamin Sesko after reaching an agreement worth $87m with RB Leipzig for his transfer, Sporting News understands.
The 22-year-old has been the subject of rival interest from Newcastle United, who have pushed hard to sign the Slovenian international.
Sources indicate that the Magpies submitted an offer worth around $81.5 million, rising to approximately $87 million with performance-related bonuses.
Despite Newcastle’s higher bid and the lure of Champions League football, Sesko’s preference is understood to be a move to Manchester, a stance that has given United the upper hand in negotiations.
Sesko enjoyed a prolific season in Germany, netting 21 goals across all competitions for Leipzig. Since arriving from RB Salzburg in 2023, he has registered 39 goals and 8 assists in 87 appearances for the Bundesliga side.
Sporting News understands that United also explored alternative striker options during the early stages of the summer window.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins was among the names considered, but Villa’s valuation proved a sticking point. Talks for Liam Delap had also taken place, though the young striker eventually completed a move to Chelsea from Ipswich Town.
With Sesko now expected to join, there is an increasing likelihood that Rasmus Hojlund could depart this summer.
Speaking last month, the 22-year-old underlined his commitment to development and earning his place wherever he plays.
“I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot whatever happens,” he said.
“I am still very young, I think people sometimes forget that. I’m only 22 years old. I’ve learned a lot, and I think that shows in my game. I’ve done very well so far during the pre-season.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United are also exploring reinforcements in midfield.
They are admirers of Cameroon international Carlos Baleba with Brighton expected to demand a fee close to $127 million USD (ÂŁ100m) for any potential transfer, a price that would make Baleba one of the most expensive midfielders in Premier League history.
