Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim addresses Harry Maguire’s contract talks ahead of Premier League clash

Manchester United secured a 2-1 victory over archrivals Liverpool in their last Premier League clash on October 19 at Anfield.

The Red Devils’ winning goal in the first Northwest derby of the season came with Harry Maguire’s stunning header after being set up by Bruno Fernandes in the 84th minute.

Maguire, who arrived at Old Trafford from Leicester City in 2019 for a then-world record fee of ÂŁ80m ($106m), has faced his share of ups and downs during his ongoing six-year tenure at Man United.

After being on the receiving end of heavy criticism, the English defender has now established himself as a key player at United, especially with his heroics in crucial matches.

Speaking after their win at Anfield last Sunday, Man United head coach Ruben Amorim hailed Maguire as a ‘really important’ player of his squad, and said,

“Harry Maguire is really important for us and was today. He is a great example, everything he has been through, a great example to every kid,” as per GOAL.

Now, after earning two consecutive wins in the top flight, Man United are set to host Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in their ninth league clash of the campaign on October 25.

During his pre-match press conference, Amorim was asked to share his take on Maguire’s future at Man United as the 32-year-old star’s contract is set to expire in June next year.

What did Ruben Amorim say about Harry Maguire’s possible contract renewal?

Amorim turned down questions about a potential contract renewal for Maguire, mentioning that ‘it is not the time to talk about that,’ and told reporters,

“We are really happy with Harry but it is not the time to talk about that. That gives the idea that we are thinking really far away, we need to think about now. We are really happy with Harry, he is really important for us but we just need to focus on the next game.”

The Portuguese manager then went on to heap praise on Maguire while highlighting that the defender ‘can improve’ further, and added,

“It was good for him to play with three centre backs, I think he feels more comfortable. Because he plays in the centre, he does not need to go to the side so much so sometimes you help players with the way you play. Sometimes it is the opposite with some players. I am really pleased. He is not young but he can learn a lot, he can improve.”

“I think he can be so much better with the ball because he has that quality and he needs to show that. Nowadays with the set pieces that you see, the amount of men that you put in the box and every cross from the opponent – everyone is playing like that. He is a massive player for us, I am really happy but that game is in the past, that goal is in the past and now let’s look forward to the present and the future.”

Maguire had made four starts out of his eight appearances across competitions for Man United so far this season, during which the defender has netted two goals and provided an assist.
