Man United vs. Man City live score: Premier League result, updates, stats from 196th Manchester derby

OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United and Manchester City will aim to hit a high note in their disappointing seasons when they clash in Sunday’s derby.

City’s record run of four consecutive Premier League titles will imminently end, and Pep Guardiola’s side are in a knife-edge battle to qualify for the Champions League next term. They started Sunday in fifth position, with just two points separating Chelsea in fourth and Newcastle in seventh.

United is down in 13th, playing merely for pride in their league campaign, with their ongoing bid for Europa League glory the priority.

Nevertheless, December’s dramatic 2-1 win at City remains the high point of Ruben Amorim’s reign and a first derby double over their neighbours since 2009/10 would be a timely boost to the Portuguese head coach.

Man United vs. Man City live updates, highlights, and commentary

32 mins: It’s a teasing inswinger and Onana and his defenders get in one-another’s way. City not really alive to the possibilities though.

31 mins: De Bruyne slips a pass down the inside right channel to Gundogan, who wins a corner. Foden to take.

29 mins: United through the middle of the field again, with both City fullbacks high. Fernandes made the wrong decision, though – a lobbed pass that Ugarte can’t volley on target.

27 mins: That’s where United will get their joy. Hojlund with some fine hold-up play, Fernandes conducts the attack, Garnacha haring across the defensive line. Dorgu is on the end of it and his end product is lacking. But City, not for the first time this season, appear to have no answer to those sort of transitions.

24 mins: De Bruyne tries a scooped pass into the United’s box that Maguire heads away with ease. Now United can break, Fernandes releases Garnacho and his cutback for Dorgu is excellent. The wing-back makes a hash of things, though and can’t get his shot off.

23 mins: De Bruyne tries to slide Foden into the United are but Maguire is there to close the door.

22 mins: City popping the ball about nicely enough to my eye. Lacks a bit of tempo, though, and Guardiola is not happy.

20 mins: Chance for United. Dalot floats in a lovely ball into the City box but Ugarte and Garnacho are unable to make decisive contact. Best opportunity of the game so far.

17 mins: As United shaped up for a defensive throw just then, Amorim was throwing his arms around in exasperation. They can’t get out at the moment. By the same token, City don’t look massively threatening. I’d be a lousy salesman.

16 mins: United sort of clear De Bruyne’s corner to the near post after O’Reilly tries a backheel. City back in possession.

15 mins: After plenty of noodling about in midfield, O’Reilly goes direct towards Marmoush. It’s a lovely ball and Maguire gets across to block the Egypt forward’s shot.

11 mins: Scrappy little passage in the United half as Silva snaffles possession but De Bruyne can’t quite work it through to Marmoush. Foden went down from Casemiro’s initial tackle and looks to be in a bit of pain.

10 mins: Foden cuts in off the right but City’s first shot of the game goes comfortably wide of the near post.

9 mins: So yeah, this City shape is a bit unusual. Sort of a 3-3-1-3 and United are finding it a bit tricky to work out a way to play through it, as evidence by Onana clattering into touch under pressure from De Bruyne.

6 mins: City have settled into some fairly inconsequential possession since that early scare. Silva appears to be playing at right-back. Sort of.

3 mins: Fernandes thumps it halfway up the wall but City are forced to concede a corner. It’s worked short before O’Reilly is forced to head clear.

1 min: Garnacho goes charging through a static City defence. Dias is forced to bring him down just outside the box and is booked. Bruno Fernandes over the free-kick.

Kickoff: 1st Half

United get us underway. City kicking towards the Streford End.

3 mins before kickoff: The teams are out and Old Trafford is bouncing. Tell the 70-odd thousand people in here that this one doesn’t matter as much as the others.

15 mins before kickoff: The warmups are done, the stands are filling up and the City supporters are chiding United about their relative lack of success since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. Blue skies to match the visiting shirts remain and it’s a picturesque setting for the 196th edition of this famous fixture.

40 mins before kickoff: Nunes and O’Reilly are probably the most intriguing inclusion for City. Both men played at full-back as City turned around their FA Cup quarterfinal at Bournemouth last weekend and will, presumably, be charged with providing the visitors’ natural width once again. That will allow the plethora of ball-playing midfielders to outnumber United in central areas, which could make for a long afternoon for Ruben Amorim’s side. However, this shape could also see City left vulnerable to counter-attacks that use the width of the pitch – the sort of moves that gave Amorim’s Sporting CP plenty of joy against Pep Guardiola’s men last November.

1 hour before kickoff: United line up pretty much as expected, with Harry Maguire and Rasmus Hojlund coming in at centre-back and centre-forward, respectively. Luke Shaw is back on the bench for the first time since December, when he made his only two appearances of the season to day.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. We’ll start with the visitors. Kevin De Bruyne starts his final Manchester derby in a lineup where Pep Guardiola has with experience, with the exception of youth-team graduate Nico O’Reilly, who keeps his place at left-back following some impressive performances over the past week.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: It’s been a frightfully tough introduction to Premier League football for Ruben Amorim but he has two victories over Pep Guardiola this season. There was that dramatic 2-1 win over City at the Etihad Stadium in December, but Amorim’s Sporting CP side ran roughshod over Guardola’s men in November, coming from behind to win 4-1 in the Champions League. Those days as a young coach with the Midas touch in Lisbon must feel like a lot longer than five months ago.

Man United vs. Man City lineups, team news

Matthijs de Ligt suffered a knock during United’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday and misses out. After coming on as an auxiliary centre-forward at the City Ground, Harry Maguire returns to a back three also featuring Leny Yoro, whose midweek injury scare was less serious

Mason Mount returned to action for the first time since the derby at City against Forest and is joined on the bench by another long-term absentee Luke Shaw, who is in a matchday squad for the first time since Decembe. Kobbie Mainoo remains sidelined.

Defenders Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven, Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans are all out. Argentina star Martinez is out for the season, alongside December’s derby matchwinner Amad Diallo.

Man United lineup (3-4-2-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro — Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu — Fernandes, Garnacho — Hojlund

Man United subs: Bayindir (GK), Lindelof, Mount, Zirkzee, Eriksen, Shaw, Amass, Chido, Kukonki.

Kevin De Bruyne has announced he will end his stay at Manchester City after 10 trophy-laden seasons when the current campaign ends. The Belgium playmaker has struggled physically amid hamstring and adductor injuries over the past couple of seasons and has not always started the biggest games when available this season.

However, Guardiola has made what could be viewed as a slightly sentimental selection and opted to start De Bruyne at Old Trafford to kick off his farewell tour. Jack Grealish started in the No.10 position and opened the scoring in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over struggling Leicester but is back on the bench alongside January arrivals Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov.

If the choice is between De Bruyne and Grealish at No. 10, the likelihood is either of the wide attackers Jeremy Doku or Savinho will make way for hometown hero Phil Foden to start and try to add to his six Manchester derby goals.

Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly both start as attacking full-back options, capable of pushing United ‘s wing-backs deep but also potentially vulnerable to counter-attacks.

Man City lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly — Silva, Kovacic, Gundogan — Foden, Marmoush, De Bruyne

Man City subs:  Ortega (GK), Gonzalez, Doku, Grealish, Savinho, Reis, Bobb, Lewis, McAtee.
