Man United star signs new contract as Onana summer exit inches closer

Manchester United have confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new contract, keeping him at the club until 2026.

The move comes at a time when the future of Andre Onana remains uncertain, and fans are reading between the goalposts.

The 39-year-old was expected to walk away this summer, with his previous deal set to expire. Many thought retirement was the likely route.

But with doubts surrounding both Onana and Altay Bayindir, United have decided to keep Heaton around as a steady hand in a shaky goalkeeping situation.

Speaking to the club, Heaton said: “I am extremely proud to continue to represent Manchester United. As a group, we are all really excited for the season ahead. I am ready to support the team in every capacity as we prepare to get back to challenging for the biggest honors.”

Heaton may not play much, but his presence off the pitch is seen as vital.

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised his professionalism and added: “Tom’s leadership and experience are really important for the group… his mentality and excellent preparation make him the perfect complement to our goalkeeping group.”

How Tom Heaton signing new contract impacts Onana’s Man Utd future

With Heaton staying, the writing might be on the wall for Onana. The Cameroon international has had a difficult run since joining from Inter Milan.

Mistakes and criticism have followed him closely — not ideal for a club chasing trophies.

Bayindir’s future also looks uncertain. The Turkish keeper wants more minutes, and he’s unlikely to find them at Old Trafford.

United have been linked with a number of new goalkeepers, including Emiliano Martinez and Diogo Costa. That suggests changes are coming, and Heaton’s new deal gives United a reliable backup option if their main stoppers move on.

In short, Heaton stays. Onana may not.
