Man United reportedly join transfer race for La Liga superstar

Ruben Amorim is planning changes at Manchester United in 2025 as he assesses a squad revamp.

The Portuguese boss has endured a mixed start to life at Old Trafford following his November arrival from Sporting CP to replace Erik ten Hag.

His ambitious tactical plans have yielded some positivity, including a 2-1 Premier League derby win over Manchester City, but there is still plenty of work to be done.

Amorim has previously confirmed he will not move for any of his former Sporting CP stars in the January window out of respect for his old team.

The door is still firmly open for a summer raid in Lisbon, but the mid-season market will focus on other targets, with reports from Spanish outlet El Desmarque claiming the Red Devils are in the race for Athletic Club star Nico Williams.

Nico Williams’ Athletic Club contract, transfer value

Williams played a crucial role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 title win alongside Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal.

The pair were tipped for a club link up this season, as Barcelona battled to bring him to Catalonia, but the 22-year-old reiterated his desire to stay in Bilbao for at least one more year.

Williams openly admitted he rejected a move to Barcelona, as he wanted to try and win a trophy at his boyhood club in 2025, but his future remains unclear.

His current contract includes a £50m ($63m) release clause, which United are rumoured to be open to paying, to add a fresh dimension to their attack.

Barcelona, PSG ‘still watching’ Nico Williams

However, Amorim is not the only interested party, with Barcelona still monitoring him, and Paris Saint-Germain also long-term admirers.

Williams’ present contract runs until 2027, and Athletic Club will not accept less than his full release fee, with chasing clubs now facing a challenge to convince the player to join them.
