Man United chase Arsenal target as Ruben Amorim faces crunch time on Andre Onana question

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim looks to be growing tired of Andre Onana’s antics and inconsistency so far this season.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper has found it tough to settle into life in Old Trafford and he could move on this summer if Amorim finds an exit route.

The Red Devils held Lyon to a 2-2 UEFA Europa League draw away from home in midweek, but Onana grabbed the post-match headlines, after making two errors which led to goals for the hosts.

Before the game he was involved in a war of words with Lyon star Nemanja Matic, who labelled the Cameroonian as ‘one of the worst to play for Manchester United.’ and Onana failed to bite back in his performance.

Frustrated with his constant mistakes, Amorim dropped him from squad for the Premier League trip to Newcastle United with several reports hinting that he is already looking at alternatives for 2025/26.

Amorim’s frustration with the 29-year-old is clear as he decided to only travel St. James Park with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton.

Amorim’s primary target could be Espnayol’s Joan Garcia with rivals Arsenal also tracking the Spanish stopper.

What’s with Joan Garcia’s release clause and Arsenal’s stance?

A week ago, Spanish outlet El Nacional suggested Arsenal have directly spoken to Garcia’s entourage with new sporting director Andrea Berta playing a vital role in convincing the 23-year-old to move to North London.

However the primary catch is that the Gunners are looking for someone to deputise for David Raya and fill Aaron Ramsdale’s back-up spot. Whereas at Old Trafford, he has an opportunity to be No. 1, replacing Onana.

The former Spain U21 international has a release clause in his current contract valued at £25m [$32m]. But the 23-year-old could be available for £17.1m [$22m] if Espanyol are relegated from La Liga.

Espanyol are currently in 15th spot, only six points above the relegation zone with only eight games left to play this season. According to Fbref, the youngster has registered six clean sheets in 30 La Liga games with 76% save accuracy rate.
