ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Manchester City host Newcastle in a Premier League match that could have a huge say on each team’s ambitions to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
City suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the knockout playoffs of Europe’s top competition on Tuesday. They will have an against-the-odds tilt at turning that scoreline around when they travel to the Santiago Bernabeu this week.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side cannot afford to take their eye off the ball domestically. Victory here would move them back into the top four after Chelsea’s 3-0 loss at Brighton on Friday night.
The same can be said for Newcastle, with Eddie Howe’s Carabao Cup finalists level on 41 points with City. They are only behind the reigning champions by virtue of goals scored. The margins between the two teams could scarcely be tighter.

Man City vs. Newcastle live updates, highlights, and commentary
45 mins: Lewis and Khusanov combine to thwart Gordon on the left flank. There’ll be one added minute. Those must have been very quick goal celebrations.
44 mins: Willock tries to get something working for Newcastle down the left channel but a combination of Stones and Ederson have other ideas.
41 mins: A Foden corner finds Haaland at the pack post. He heads wide. Must be feeling a little left out amid all this Marmoush business.
39 mins: Newcastle corner. It ends up with Trippier, who swings one deep the far post. Ederson doesn’t quite get there but applies enough pressure for Guimaraes to head harmlessly over.
36 mins: It’s not a day to be a Newcastle fullback. Hall looks like he needs to reattach his head. Savinho twisting and turning only for the finish to let the Brazilian down once more.
33 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Omar Marmoush!!!!
That’s a 14-minute hat-trick for Marmoush! Erling who??? It’s far, faaaar too easy as Hall lets Savinho run at him and cut the ball back into space, where Newcastle have the novel idea of not bothering to mark the dude who’s already scored twice.
32 mins: Stones gets up to head clear under pressure from Guimaraes. Newcastle can’t keep the pressure on, though, because Tonali commits a brainless foul on Foden.
31 mins: Ederson out well to punch the corner clear.
30 mins: Chance for Newcastle! Gvardiol sells Nico short, Willocks picks his pocket and here’s Isak. Stones stays with him and deflects the shot across goal behind.
29 mins: City playing like a a team who know they still need more goals! Marmoush to Haaland, Burns slides behind with Foden poised to finish.
28 mins: Isak lifts into he box, Lewis wins the header. Oooh, Nico and Gundogan play City out of trouble silkily and they’re away. Savinho into the box and should do better – Dubravka saves!
26 mins: Haaland darts after a bouncing ball and Dubravka holds on under pressure. Newcastle just need five minutes where they stop things happening here.
24 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Omar Marmoush!!!!
Marmoush has taken an extreme liking to Trippier. The Newcastle defender doesn’t know whether to stick or twist as he’s cut inside and City’s Egypt forward fires low past Dubravka.
22 mins: Gordon, evidently well aware of how effectively City hold onto leads these days, looks for a response and it needs a fine Stones interception with Isak lurking.
19 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Omar Marmoush!!!!
Well, they have been warned. Ederson launches a long ball, Trippier makes a holy show of himself and Marmoush lifts over Dubravka for his first Manchester City goal.
17 mins: Risky from Newcastle as Schar hits a clearance straight to Marmoush, who duly overhits the attempt to play Haaland in. Now Isak has a chance to break but Khusanov holds him up before Gvardiol averts any further danger.
16 mins: Foden drills a low ball towards Haaland from the left but Burn was always favourite. Here come the hots again and Marmoush crashes over from a tight angle, immediately apologising to Haaland for not seeking him out.
13 mins: Dubravka out of his goal as Stones pumps a long ball towards Marmoush. The keeper shepherds it out for a throw but that looked a profoundly uncomfortable experience.
12 mins: Savinho launches into a lovely dribble from the centre circle. It takes him all the way jinking into the Newcastle box. Hall sticks to his task well and Dubravka claims.
11 mins: Gordon charges down Ederson, who doesn’t seem at all bothered but skews the clearance out for a throw.
9 mins: Nico does just that, then loses his footing. Isak has the chance to construct a Newcastle attack, only to pick out Guimaraes in an offside position.
8 mins: Lots of calm possession from City that threatens to get a little more probing but they’re evidently wary of turning over the ball and Newcastle’s threat when that happens.
6 mins: The corner is cleared unfussily.
5 mins: Khusanov treds on Gordon and Newcastle have a free-kick about 35 yards out. It goes harmlessly out for a goal kick, which is taken short and now Gvardiol goes long for Haaland. That’s s better attempt but he can’t get the ball inder his spell and Burn gets a tackle in. City corner.
4 mins: Ederson bangs one over the top for Haaland but there’s too much on it and it runs through to Dubravka.
2 mins: Oohhh, Gundogan is sold a little short on the edge of the City area by Ederson. He shields the ball well and is fouled by Tonali but put a pin in that one.
1 min: Neat pass from Nico through the lines to Foden, who shapes to shoot, dummies and is crowded out by Hall.
Kickoff: 1st Half
Phil Foden gets us underway, which suggests that at least to start with he’ll be playing centrally with Savinho and Marmoush on the wings.
4 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams. One of the knock-on effects of City’s latest run of injuries is they’re led out by captain for the day… Erling Haaland.
15 mins before kickoff: Newcastle are on the crest of a wave having brushed aside title-chasing Arsenal to reach the Carabao Cup final and Alexander Isak is pressing hard against Erling Haaland’s claims of being the Premier League’s best striker. Their previous win on this ground came in the League Cup in 2014 and you have to go even further back to when City were playing at Maine Road in 2000 for the Magpies’ most recent away win in this Premier League fixture,
40 mins before kickoff: There’ll be plenty of eyes on Abdukodir Khusanov this afternoon. The 20-year-old Uzbekistan defender endured a tough baptism in his City debut against Chelsea last month when he was at fault for the visitors’ opening goal. He was replaced early in the second half as City recovered to win 3-1. Khusanov’s only appearance since came in the second half of last weekend’s FA Cup win at Leyton Orient but injuries to Akanji, Ake and Dias have forced Guardiola’s hand.
1 hr 5 mins before kickoff: This is what the Newcastle XI looks like. Alexander Isak is likely to be licking his lips as he looks at that makeshift City backline.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The team news is in and it’s quite startling for Manchester City. There’s a Premier League debut for Nico Gonzalez alongside Ilkay Gundogan in midfield. Omar Marmoush and Phil Foden also return to a an attacking line-up. They might just have to out-score Newcastle because Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake are nowhere to be seen in the matchday 18, presumably joining Manuel Akanji on the sidelines with yet more injuries.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: City have only had an FA Cup win over Leyton Orient as respite between the Madrid loss and a 5-1 hammering at Arsenal last time out in the Premier League. All things considered, Pep Guardiola was in fine form at his pre-match news conference as City aim to plot a path out of their latest form slump. He took the opportunity to give rivals a cheeky reminder about what his team have achieved at their best.
[Even] with that [injuries], we took all the records in England. Nobody has done four Premier Leagues in a row,” said Guardiola. “It’s different when you break your own record and say: ‘What’s next?’ We have all the records – had 100 points in a season. I said many times to the players, when I analyse the last nine years, we’ve had a really really bad three months. It’s not bad, no?
People are saying: ‘What’s happened Pep?’ But what has happened in the past [under him]? That is not normal now, or in the past.
Who would do 100 points now? I’m waiting. Or four in a row, I’m waiting. Have you seen Liverpool this season? They cannot do 100 points already, definitely cannot – 99 but not 100.
2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester City vs. Newcastle. This is fifth versus six, with both teams on 41 points and +13 goal difference. Only City have scored six more goals this season splits the sides. If there is a winner, they will go fourth ahead of Chelsea. Safe to say this feels pretty important.
