Man City vs. Man United score: Premier League result, updates, stats as Haaland, Foden secure derby win

Erling Haaland fired a second-half brace as Manchester City surged to a 3-0 derby victory over Manchester United.

The Etihad Stadium came together before the game to pay an emotionally charged tribute to Manchester boxing great Ricky Hatton, who died this weekend aged 46.

It was another local hero from the blue side of town who opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Phil Foden diverted a smart header beyond Altay Bayindir after Jeremy Doku found him at the second attempt.

Tijjani Reijnders wasted City’s best opportunity to make to 2-0 before the break. United were generally a match for their hosts during the opening 45 minutes, but once again laboured when it came to creating clear chances.

Foden and Doku combined to send Haaland into the United box for a smart finish seven minutes into the second half.

Bryan Mbeumo almost brought United back into the match with a screaming volley that City debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma saved superbly. Ruben Amorim’s men then self-destructed in the 69th minute.

Bernardo Silva picked Luke Shaw’s pocket and shovelled the ball towards Haaland. Substitute Harry Maguire could only clear it back to Silva, at which point every United player was in the City half. Haaland was left to enjoy the freedom of opposition territory and his Zen celebration.

The result means City have six points from four matches ahead of games with Napoli in the Champions League and Arsenal in the Premier League this week. United are two further back and host Chelsea in six days.

Man City vs. Man United updates, highlights, and commentary

90+3 mins: United have continued to forlornly plug away and Dorgu sends a looping header just wide of Donnarumma’s far post.

90+1 mins: Into four minutes of stoppage time as Reijnders and Foden drive forward in search of a fourth. The ball fizzes across the United goal.

85 mins: Donnarumma is out to punch the corner clear, Fernandes fizzes a shot from the edge of the area. Casemiro should turn it home but I think he was offside anyway.

84 mins: Bryan, I’m so, so sorry. Mbeumo should score but doesn’t from all of two yards. The ball clipped off Donnarumma’s boot so it’s a corner, but the goalkeper shouldn’t have been in the conversation.

82 mins: Mbeumo thumps one just wide from outside the box. In a sparsely populated field, he’s looked United’s most likely today.

81 mins: Zirkzee and Casemiro on for Sesko and Ugarte. Which you wouldn’t imagine will change the price of fish but the sun is out now and it’s nice for them to have something to do.

77 mins: Double change for City, as Rodri and Doku make way for Nico and Savinho. Doku has been excellent.

74 mins: It should be 4-0 as Reijnders charges into the vacant United half but shoots wide. There comes a point where Amorim probably has to revert to damage limitation here.

69 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!!

Dear, oh dear. United have self-destructed. A team who have barely created a chance of note end up with every player in the City half. They give the ball away, Silva rolls it to Haaland and the Norway superstar completes a gentle training drill to send the stadium into raptures.

64 mins: Silva down the right, digs out a cross with his weaker foot and Haaland’s prodded volley is too close to Bayindir.

63 mins: Amorim twists, Mainoo and Maguire on for Mazaraoui and Yoro. United almost have success from the corner as O’Reilly glances across own goal but City survive.

61 mins: Ooofffff, fabulous save from Donnarumma! Mbeumo pulls away to the far post and hits a peach of a volley, It’s detined for the left corner but the big Italian turns it around the post.

55 mins: What on earth was that absolute nonsense! De Ligt bangs the ball right into blue-shirted traffic, it’s helped through to Haaalnd. His touch was heavy to get around Bayindir and he slide-tackled against the post when faced with an open goal, albeit under presser from the offending De Ligt. Silva fires wide from the follow-up. Ridiculous it’s not 3-0.

52 minsGOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!

Did Guardiola just do his variation on Mr Burns’: “Hey, Strawberry, hit a home run!”? Foden nips a ball through to Doku, who helps it on to Haaland for a cool finish past Bayindir.

50 mins: City in behind the ball and Shaw duffs one out for a goalkick. Amorim marches back to his dugout in a funk, Haaland comes over to Guardiola for some instructions.

47 mins: Early United pressure after the restart finds Erling Haaland mucking in with some near-post clearances. There’s a lot of him to make them, in fairness.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We’re back under way. No changes for either side. Given how many players are recently back to fitness for City, it will be intriguing to see how Guardiola uses his bench, especially given how they collapsed at Brighton a fortnight ago.

Halftime

City clear the set-piece and go in with a slender lead. Foden has been their outstanding player and has the game’s only goal. It’s been a flighty game, lacking in rhythm. Ruben Amorim probably likes most things part from the scoreline and his team’s failure to create anything. That reads like backhand that Carlos Alcaraz would be proud of, but United have shaded the overall play.

45 mins: Donnarumma gets out to clear with one of his mighty paws. There’s one minute to be added. City will have to defend a free-kick during it after Gvardiol hauls down Dorgu.

44 mins: Corner to United on the left. Fernandes, ever popular with the locals. He takes an in-swinger. Referee Atkinsom has spotted some nonsense so he’ll take it again.

39 mins: A rare period of calm possession from the hosts ends with O’Reilly smashing over from 25 yards. It did sit up invitingly for the youngster.

37 mins: Rodri fails to find a through ball when he had options aplenty. There’s the long injury to consider but he’s been unusually poor.

35 mins: Fernandes plonks it straight into Donnarumma’s gloves. A waste.

34 mins: It’s been a mixed bag of a half from Khusanov, who gets lost under a high ball, flattens Dorgu and United have a free-kick on the left corner of the City box.

32 mins: Sesko scampering onto a ball over the top. Donnarumma comes out to save and the ball deflexts off the United striker for a goal kick.

29 mins: Reijnders is dispossessed in midfield and Mbeumo is through. He blasts over before seeing a late offside flag. He might have rathered the assistant saved him the trouble.

28 mins: Mbeumo scoots down the right, his cross is headed clear by Khusanov.

25 mins: Almost 2-0 to City! Doku again integral as O’Reilly slides him in. Reijnders meets the low ball in first tiem and Bayindir hangs on in greasy conditions, with Haaland in close attendance.

18 minsGOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Phil Foden!!!!

Had to be, didn’t it? Back in the team, the boyhood City fan has opened the soring in the derby. Finally, Rodri gets his foot on the ball as opposed to it rolling under it. He finds Doku, who darts into the United box. His cross in blocked but he flicks in back into the box first time and Foden nods a smart header past Bayindir.

Available in the UK

16 mins: Rodri again gets himself weirdly compromised in midfield. United are all over him at the moment. Amad tries a spectacular back-post volley and makes a complete mess of it.

15 mins: Ball pinged through looking for Mbeumo but Donnarumma is out to mop up. Both teams struggling for fluency still. Not a bad game but a skittish one.

11 mins: It’s cleared at the near post, Foden finds a lovely, raking pass to Silva but the Portugal midfielder has no support.

10 mins: Silva the latest City player to be caught in possession and he’s forced to foul Dorgu. That should really be a yellow card. Mbeumo over the ball in a crossing position on th left.

8 mins: Bayindir gets himself into a mess and is almost slide-tackled inside his own six yard box by Haaland. Rodri then has his pocket picked by Amad. United will like the positions they’re getting into on the break and the frantic nature of this so far.

6 mins: United pass far too easily through the City midfield, only for Amad to botch the opportunity by sending his ball to the flank out of play.

4 mins: First action in a City shirt for Donnarumma, who saves smarktly form Sesko. The hosts then give the ball away near their own box, a cross comes in and Donnarumma’s punch sets up a counter-attacking opportunity that comes to nought.

Kickoff: 1st Half

A wonderful tribute to Ricky Hatton. God, it really doesn’t seem real. It’s so sad. Anyway,  to the football. Haaland almost gives City the lead after 30 seconds, drillig just wide from a tight angle.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams to a decent derby day din. The City fans in the South Stand have unveiled a banner bearing the lytics to Oasis song Acquiese, which feels poignant given today’s wider events.

15 mins before kickoff: At his pre-match press conference, Pep Guardiola discussed how City have always finished above United during his nine-season tenure in Manchester. That’s true, but City are also winless in their past four derbies, a slump they need to turn around today.

40 mins before kickoff: Phil Foden spoke to Sky Sports a short while ago. The Manchester-born attacking midfielder paid tribute to Ricky Hatton and said the City players would try to win the game in his honour today.

My heart goes out to his family at this time. Obviously, to hear the news before a big game is devastating and I’m sure he would’ve been here supporting us.
Today is for him and we’re going to try to get the win and do the best we can for him. We’ve got to use it as motivation.

1 hour before kickoff: There’s a first Premier League start for Benjamin Sesko up front for United. Noussair Mazraoui will start at right wing-back, where he excelled in this fixture last season. United’s matchwinner from that game, Amad Diallo, also starts.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. Gianluigi Donnarumma comes straight in for his City debut. Josko Gvardiol also gets his first start of the season in defence after returning to fitness, while Manchester natives Nico O’Reilly and Phil Foden get their first starts of the season.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: This is poised to be a strange, surreal and overwhelmingly sad occasion. Just a few hours ahead of kickoff, the devastating news broke that former two-weight boxing world champion Ricky Hatton had died, aged just 46. Hatton was a famously passionate and outspoken City fan, but was loved across the Manchester divide, a true hero and icon of this sporting city. There will be a minute’s appreciation for Hatton before kickoff.
