Man City star set to miss two more matches in the Club World Cup

Manchester City bagged a 6-0 victory against Al Ain in their second clash of the Club World Cup on June 22 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Even though it was a massive win for Man City, they had one of their players missing in action due to suspension.

Pep Guardiola’s side were also on the receiving end of victory in their opening match of the competition. However, they were left with 10 players on the pitch in the dying minutes of the clash against Wydad as Rico Lewis was shown a red card for committing a foul.

While the games against Al Ain covered Lewis’ one-match ban, there appears to be more bad news for the Englishman and Man City.

Lewis has now been given a further two-match suspension for his red card against Wydad after a FIFA disciplinary committee ruled that the tackle committed by the defender was ‘serious foul play.’

A statement issued by FIFA read, “The FIFA disciplinary committee has imposed the following sanction on Manchester City’s Rico Lewis who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA Club World Cup match against Wydad AC. Three-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1 e) of the FIFA disciplinary code.”

Reports have also suggested that Man City had already appealed against the extension, but it was not considered.

Which matches will Man City’s Rico Lewis miss in the Club World Cup?

With two victories in their first two matches of the group stage, Man City have already qualified for the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup.

The extended two-match ban will keep Lewis off the pitch for Man City’s third and last clash of the group stage, which is against Juventus on June 26, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Lewis will also miss Man City’s Round of 16 clash, with their opponents yet to be confirmed following the conclusion of the final matches of the competition’s group stage.
