Man City boss Pep Guardiola confirms ‘new faces will come’ in summer transfer window

Manchester City bagged a 2-0 win against Fulham on May 25 to round off their domestic season, and finish third in the Premier League.

City have endured an overall underwhelming 2024/25 campaign with multiple injuries issues and no major silverware won by Pep Guardiola’s team.

However, Guardiola did secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League for 2025/26, and multiple reports suggest major changes to his squad are incoming this summer.

Guardiola has previously bemoaned the pressure of having to balance a bloated squad with a comment to club officials that he ‘doesn’t want a bigger squad.’

With the EPL season now over, Guardiola was asked for an update on his summer plans, and the Catalan has confirmed he will push for tweaks.

During his post-match press conference, Guardiola said the decision over potential transfers lies with the club, and he would only provide ‘suggestions.’

“What happens next season the club is going to decide. I give my suggestions but the club decides. I don’t have the feeling [about needing an overhaul], I’m sorry!” Guardiola told the Manchester Evening News.

“Maybe the club is a little different, we’ll see, but I have 24 players and I see my players, the day before in training, I said, ‘Oh my god! How good they are!’ But of course, new faces will come, especially in positions where we’re a little weaker.”

Guardiola once again clarified he does not want a ‘lot of players’ and he believes there will not be several signings.

“We have a good squad. They have contracts and they want to stay, I don’t want a lot of players [in a big squad]. We have 23 players under contract. That’s why I don’t have the feeling that a lot of people will come.”

“But we’ll see; the summer is long, the Club World Cup, players maybe realise they’re not going to play, ‘I want to leave, I’m not happy’. I don’t know! I’m sorry, it’s not my business. My business was qualifying for the Champions League and the rest belongs to the club.”

Guardiola & Co. face Moroccan club Wydad AC in their first game at the Club World Cup on June 18, at Lincoln Financial Field, Pennsylvania.
