Mallorca vs. Barcelona score: La Liga result, stats as Barca trounce nine-man hosts in season opener

Barcelona got their 2025/26 La Liga season started in style as they clobber nine-man Mallorca 3-0 on the road to open the league campaign.

Barcelona went up 2-0 before the half-hour mark, as Ballon d’Or candidate Raphinha opened the scoring with a back-post finish before Ferran Torres double the lead in controversial fashion.

The second goal, which came as a Mallorca defender lay injured on the ground, began a Mallorca meltdown of epic proportions. After Manu Morlanes was booked for dissent in the aftermath of the goal, he was sent off minutes later for a second yellow. Then, shortly after, striker Vedat Muriqi was sent off for a high boot to the face of Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

That left Mallorca down to nine men for almost an hour, which resulted in a sleepy affair the rest of the way. Lamine Yamal solidified the scoreline with a goal deep into stoppage-time, but otherwise the match ended with little else to savor, thanks in large part to Leo Roman in goal who was excellent in keeping Barcelona from adding on even more.

Mallorca fans and players were furious with referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero, but in truth, can have few complains for how the match played out. Both red cards were absolutely the right decision, and the hosts were even to blame for switching off on the second Barcelona goal.

Besides Garcia in goal, Marcus Rashford also made his Barcelona debut in this match coming off the bench, but it was a sleepy environment in which to make an impact.

Mallorca vs. Barcelona live updates, highlights from La Liga

FULLTIME: Mallorca 0-3 Barcelona

The second half was sleepy as both teams knew it simply delayed the inevitable, but Lamine Yamal still managed to finish the scoreline off in style.

Barcelona get off to a strong start, as both star forwards find themselves on the scoresheet.

There will be headlines about the refereeing in this match, but on the whole, there’s really nothing for Mallorca to complain about. They were their own worst enemies, and have to be much better if they wish to turn things around, knowing both Madrid clubs loom in their next four matches.

90+4 min: GOAL! BARCELONA! Lamine Yamal finishes it off in style by depositing it into the top corner with a left-footed curler! A brilliant way to finish the game!

Watch in USA:

88th min: Chance, Barcelona! Now Leo Roman pushes away a Lamine Yamal shot that forces him down and to his right! Another great save in what’s been a fantastic performance from the Mallorca goalkeeper!

85th min: Chance, Barcelona! Pedri rips one from distance and just misses! Leo Roman goes sailing through the air but the shot just evades both the post and his outstretched fingertips.

77th min: Jules Kounde replaces Raphinha as this game concludes in a crawl. Neither side has any interest in testing the eventual result given how much this one feels already decided.

70th min: Chance, Barcelona! Raphinha pulls it back for Dani Olmo, and his effort clatters the post from close range and comes out!

Then moments later, Eric Garcia crashes onto a Frenkie de Jong cross, but his header is right at the goalkeeper!

68th min: Barcelona will make a triple change as Marcus Rashford makes his debut for the club, replacing Ferran Torres. Also entering are Gavi and Jofre Torrents, for Alex Balde and Pau Cubarsi.

58th min: Chance, Barcelona! WHAT a save by Leo Roman to keep out a Dani Olmo header! The Mallorca goalkeeper has to track backwards and go full-stretch to scoop the ball out before it goes over the line!

Then moments later Raphinha curls one low that goes just wide of the far post!

52nd min: Ronald Araujo throws a shoulder into Mateo Joseph to shield a ball out of play, sending the Mallorca substitute sailing hard into the advertising boards. The assistant referee is right there, and does not flag for a foul, which electrifies the crowd and players again. That is the first real understandable complaint Mallorca can have here — that should have been a foul.

50th min: Chance, Barcelona! Another dizzying Lamine Yamal run produces another opportunity, as he sizzles a square ball to Ferran Torres in the middle. He appears wide open for a shot, but before he can unleash the ball on net, he’s closed down by Antonio Sanchez who gets a strong block on the effort.

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way for an intriguing 45 minutes, with both sides making changes. Barcelona bring on Dani Olmo to replace Fermin Lopez, a bit surprising here that Raphinha hasn’t yet been replaced considering he’s been booked. We may see Marcus Rashford soon in that regard.

For Mallorca, Pablo Torre and Mateu Morey, both on yellow cards, have been replaced by Daniel Rodriguez and Omar Mascarell, with Mateo Joseph also entering for Takuma Asano.

HALFTIME: Mallorca 0-2 Barcelona

There’s a scuffle right at the end as the Mallorca bench is in Raphinha’s face for that last tackle. Halftime is necessary to simmer tempers, as this match was close to popping off.

Mallorca, in truth, have been abysmal. They lacked any semblance of discipline, and are down to nine men as a result. While the second goal came somewhat controversially, they can have few complaints about any moments. Both red cards were fair, and even on the goal they must play to the whistle, something taught at the lowest levels of athletics.

This could get ugly in the final 45 minutes.

45+6 min: Raphinha now scissor tackles Mateu Morey and receives a yellow card of his own. The crowd is up in arms wanting red, but Raphinha never clasped his legs and so yellow is the correct result.

42nd min: Now Pablo Torre is booked for dragging back Raphinha in the Barcelona third. The discipline from the hosts today has been pathetic!

36th min: RED CARD, MALLORCA! Now another yellow card to Mallorca, as Vedat Muriqi catches Joan Garcia very high up on the chest or neck area, maybe even in the lower chin. The Mallorca striker is VERY lucky that this isn’t another red card! He’s caught the Barcelona goalkeeper extremely high, and in truth, it’s quite incredible that VAR hasn’t been involved here!

Well now, maybe it has, the referee has gone over to the monitor and will review this! It’s studs right to the goalkeeper’s head, with Garcia not even bending down! This is a red card all day, and almost surely will be!

IT IS! Mallorca are down to NINE men with almost an hour to go!!

Watch in UK:

33rd min: RED CARD! MALLORCA! Lamine Yamal is felled at the top of the penalty area, and the referee immediately produces a second yellow card for Manu Morlanes!!! He’d picked up a yellow for dissent after the second Barcelona goal, and here he chops down the young Barcelona man quite clearly! He’s got no complaints, what a silly challenge!

23rd min: GOAL! BARCELONA! Confusion reigns as the referee appears to blow his whistle for an injury in the Mallorca penalty area, and then Ferran Torres scores during the play! An initial shot by Lamine Yamal hits defender Antonio Raillo in the head, toppling him to the ground, and the referee appears to bring his whistle to his mouth…but did he ever actually blow?

It appears not! Many of the players had stopped, but Torres curls one in from outside the area! The referee has a LONG conversation with Mallorca manager Jagoba Arrasate, who is booked for his protests and needs a long explanation for the situation.

Manu Morlanes is also booked in the aftermath. What a mess!

Watch in USA:

22nd min: Chance, Mallorca! A wonderful move gets Vedat Muriqi wide open at the top of the penalty area, but his shot is far too central, and it results in an easy save from Joan Garcia in the end! That’s a very poor finish on a huge opportunity!

15th min: Mallorca get their first good counter-attack of the season, but the cross from the left for Vedat Muriqi sees the striker poke the ball backwards for a trailer that never arrives, and Barcelona pick up the ball having safely evaded the chance.

10th min: Mallorca right-back Mateu Morey, who lost Raphinha on the opening goal, is now booked as he once again loses his man. Joan Garcia throws long to Raphinha, who got behind Morey, and the Mallorca defender is forced to drag back his mark, absorbing an early yellow card.

7th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! RAPHINHA PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF, OPENING THE SCORING! It’s that familiar combination once again, as Lamine Yamal feeds his Brazilian teammate, and Raphinha’s features his trademark far-post finish.

Watch in USA:

Watch in UK:

5th min: As expected, Barcelona have dominated the opening stages of this match. There is one good passage of attacking play as Lamine Yamal cooks a defender with a nutmeg and reaches the byline, but his cutback at the near post is cleared.

Kickoff: They’re under way in sunny Mallorca!

Mallorca vs. Barcelona: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Will Raphinha and Lamine Yamal begin their hunt for the La Liga Golden Boot award tonight? Almost time to find out!

30 mins to kickoff: Marcus Rashford is ready off the bench to make his Barcelona debut should he be required. Can the England international revive his career in Spain this season?

45 mins to kickoff: It’s a big call from Hansi Flick to start Eric Garcia over Jules Kounde at right-back, and one that comes with plenty of questions. Kounde suffered a season-ending muscle injury in the late stages of last season, and that injury is a big reason why Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League in the semifinals. Garcia had big moments, but overall was poor in the role.

According to reports in Spain, however, Flick feels that Garcia is “more suitable for the role,” which makes little sense when looking at last season. Couple this with the decision to force Marc-Andre ter Stegen out of the side, and Flick appears to be gambling on a couple of important decisions that could change the course of Barcelona’s season.

1 hour to kickoff: Thanks to their continued financial difficulties, Barcelona have are lacking bench options for today’s match. Getting new signings Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia registered for competition was tough enough, but they have not been able to register three other players who signed new contracts this offseason.

Wojciech Szczesny is one player who has not seen his one-year deal processed, while Gerard Martin and Roony Bardghji have also not been registered. It leaves the club absurdly thin for today’s game, should anyone find themselves injured.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in, and there are two surprises for Barcelona. It’s a bit eye-opening that Fermin Lopez is given the nod over Dani Olmo at the No. 10 position to begin the year, while Jules Kounde is on the bench as Eric Garcia is preferred at right-back.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Team news will be through shortly. Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia have been registered, will either of them be in the starting lineup?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Speaking of kits, Mallorca are wearing a special edition of their home kits, which are…interesting.

2 hours to kickoff: Welcome to coverage of Barcelona’s opening match of 2025/26 from The Sporting News!

Barcelona will have to play in last season’s third kit today. Their away kit clashes with Mallorca’s home shorts, and they have not announced this season’s third kit just yet, so they have to dip into the reserves to open with last season’s shirt.

Mallorca vs. Barcelona lineups, team news

Mallorca’s summer business included a move to sign Pablo Torre from Barcelona and he’s in line to start against his former side.

Spain Under-21 international Mateo Joseph has also joined on loan from Leeds United, but key defender Pablo Maffeo is out with a hamstring issue.

Mallorca starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Roman (GK) — Morey, Valjent, Raillo, Mojica — Sanchez, Morlanes —Asano, Darder, Torre — Muriqi.

Mallorca subs: Bergstrom (GK), D. Lopez, Lato, D. Rodriguez, Salas, Llabres, Mascarell, Prats, Luna, Domenech, M. Joseph.

Barcelona’s sole absentee is captain Ter Stegen with the Germany international at the centre of swirling controversy in Catalonia. After initially rejecting Barcelona’s request to send his post-surgery medical report to La Liga, the veteran goalkeeper relented, and the club reinstated his captaincy.

The fact Ter Stegen has now officially been ruled a long-term injury absentee means Garcia will be able to be registered thanks to the salary space freed up. The club also confirmed on Saturday that Rashford had also seen his registration confirmed, so both players will be in contention to face Mallorca.

A late call will be made on Robert Lewandowski‘s muscle injury, but it seems he is unlikely to play.

Barcelona starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Garcia (GK) — Garcia, Cubarsi, Araujo, Balde — De Jong, Pedri — Lamine Yamal, F. Lopez, Raphinha — Torres.

Barcelona subs: Pena (GK), Kochen (GK), Christensen, Torrents, Kounde, Olmo, Gavi, Casado, P. Fernandez, A. Fernandez, Rashford.
