With the All-Star break less than two weeks away, ESPN revealed the starting lineups for this year’s MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta.
At second base for the American League, ESPN and the MLB announced that Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres will be the starting second baseman in the MLB All-Star Game.
Torres beat Baltimore Orioles’ second baseman Jackson Holliday for the starting spot. Torres got 66 percent of the votes in the second phase of voting compared to Holliday’s 34 percent.
Wednesday night’s announcement makes it the third appearance in the All-Star Game for Torres and the first time since 2019. The other time he was an All-Star was in 2018. He spent the first seven seasons of his major league career with the New York Yankees, but signed with Detroit last offseason.
Torres is proving to be one of, if not, the best signing of the year. Torres is batting at .284 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs in 72 games as he has played a key role in the Tigers success the first half of this season.
Though Torres went 0-for-3 in Detroit’s first game of its double-header against the Washington Nationals, he is coming off a seven-game hit streak where he tallied six runs during the span.
Torres’ performance this year has helped the Tigers get to the top of the MLB with a 54-32 record. The Tigers also currently hold a 12.5-game lead over the second place Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. The franchise record for a lead in a division was 15.5 games in 1984, when the Tigers won their only World Series.
