The Dallas Mavericks made one of the most controversial trades in recent history, and it might only sting more as time passes.
In February, the Mavericks sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a package that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas. Immediately, the NBA world was in shock, and that quickly turned to anger and disappointment for Mavericks fans.
Over the past few months, Dallas has looked to move past the surprising decision and build a contender again. Despite all of GM Nico Harrison’s efforts to get the Mavericks’ fanbase on board with the current version of the team, the connection fans had with Doncic is far too strong to be forgotten anytime soon.
In a recent video from the Lakers’ YouTube channel, Doncic talked about some of his motivation and what he wants to accomplish in Los Angeles. Among other things, Doncic said he wants to be known as “the guy that brought championships to the city.”
Doncic is the face of the Lakers’ future as LeBron James’ retirement is on the horizon. So, Doncic’s goal to be the guy who brings titles to Los Angeles makes plenty of sense, considering he would be the driving force in any Lakers title run in the coming years.
That was, of course, Doncic’s goal in Dallas, and he narrowly missed doing so just a season ago. Doncic won Western Conference Finals MVP on Dallas’ Finals run, and it looked like the first of potentially many Finals runs in Dallas.
However, Doncic will be in Los Angeles, and Mavericks fans might have to watch him hoist the Larry O’Brien with another franchise.
