Luka Doncic contract details: Lakers lock up superstar on three-year max extension

Luka Doncic will be in La-La Land for the foreseeable future.

The Lakers agreed to a three-year, $165 million extension with their Slovenian supernova on Saturday, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal ensures Doncic, 26, will stay around for at least another two seasons, turning the player option Doncic held next summer into ashes.

Doncic took to social media to confirm the news. He’ll donate $5 million of his salary to fund 77 athletes’ career pursuits.

“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates, and all the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one,” Doncic said in a statement. “This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud.

“This is just the beginning. I’m excited for what’s ahead and to keep building something special with this team.”

Doncic arrived in Los Angeles with great fanfare following his shocking trade from the Mavericks. His first season was solid, if unspectacular; his statistical performance glimmered, although perhaps not quite to the level he reached during his Dallas pinnacle. Injuries took their toll on the five-time first-team All-NBA talent, who was limited to a career-low 50 games played in 2024-25. The Lakers fell in five games to the Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs.

With his new contract, not only does Doncic land one of the biggest deals in league history, but he also ensured that the funds he surrendered when he was dealt to Los Angeles come back to him. Here’s what you need to know.

Luka Doncic contract details

  • Years: 3
  • Value: $165 million

Doncic’s deal comes with a player option after the 2027-28 season. He’ll make $55 million a season, the 12th-highest salary in the league.

Given Doncic’s credentials, a more impressive salary was warranted. If he stayed in Dallas, he would have been eligible for a five-year supermax contract — one that would’ve doled out $315 million, more than any other deal in league history.

Doncic has to settle for a smaller contract now, but, according to insider Marc Stein, he’ll get a chance to recoup his losses in due time. Assuming Doncic opts out in 2028, he could be eligible for another supermax worth more than around $417 million after collecting 10 years of NBA service time.

“It’s an honor, playing for this organization,” Doncic said during an extension presser. “Many, many great players played here. Obviously, I want to add one more [banner] up there. That’s what we’re working for.

“Honestly, I think we have a great team. We have what we need to compete for a championship. I’ll bring what I already brought: Trying to win every game no matter what. We got some new great guys on the team, so you know we’re gonna go for it.”
