Luis Gil injury update: Yankees SP headed for MRI following shoulder tightness, could miss opening day

The Yankees enter the 2025 season with one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, but their rotation appeared to take a hit on Friday.

Luis Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year who broke out in 2024, seemed to suffer an injury while throwing a bullpen session. While there isn’t much the Yankees know about the injury so far, Gil may be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Here’s the latest on Gil’s injury.

Luis Gil injury update

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the media on Friday that Gil will have an MRI on his shoulder after experiencing tightness during a bullpen session. Boone said that while the team is concerned, they don’t want to speculate beyond what they know.

“When a pitcher stops his bullpen, that’s concerning,” Boone said, via Greg Joyce of The New York Post. “But I also don’t want to get too far ahead. We’ll see what we have. But anytime they pull themselves from a bullpen a couple pitches in, that’s concerning.”

However, Boone did admit that Gil will likely miss time with the injury.

While Gil won the AL Rookie of the Year last season, the Yankees have a deep rotation that should allow them to replace Gil while he is out. Gil had not appeared in a game yet during Spring Training.

Luis Gil stats

Games 29
Record 15-7
Innings 151.2
ERA 3.50
Strikeouts 171

Gil’s first full season in the majors was impressive, as he totaled a 3.50 ERA over 29 starts. Gil specifically came out of the gates strong to help the Yankees replace ace Gerrit Cole, who was injured for the first few months of the season.

He won the AL Rookie of the Year for his efforts and is expected to be a major part of New York’s rotation again this year.

Projected Yankees starting rotation

Rank Pitcher
1. Gerrit Cole
2. Max Fried
3. Carlos Rodon
4. Clarke Schmidt
5. Marcus Stroman
6. Luis Gil (injured)

Gil’s injury means Marcus Stroman enters the rotation as the Yankees’ No. 5 starter. The veteran has been on the trade block all offseason, but New York hasn’t been able to find a trade partner.

Instead, Stroman should slot into Gil’s spot on the team while the reigning Rookie of the Year is out. Stroman is set to make $18.5 million this season and has a vesting option for the 2026 season if he reaches 140 innings pitched.

The rest of the Yankees rotation remains as planned. Gerrit Cole leads the way after missing the first part of last season due to an elbow injury, but the 34-year-old righty is healthy so far. Max Fried joins Cole at the top of the rotation after signing an eight-year, $218 million deal with New York in December.

Fried’s arrival means Carlos Rodon moves down to the No. 3 spot in his third season as a Yankee, while Clarke Schmidt fills the No. 4 spot.
