Luis Enrique gives brutal warning to PSG players before Inter Miami clash

PSG are not in Atlanta for a reunion, they are here to win.

The reigning European champions walk into Mercedes-Benz Stadium knowing there’s no room for emotion, as a familiar face stares back at them.

Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano – all legends of the Barcelona side Luis Enrique led to multiple titles, now wear the pink of Inter Miami.

But for Luis Enrique, sentiment is no longer currency but survival is.

PSG arrive in the last 16 of the expanded Club World Cup after topping Group B, thanks to an opening 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid and results falling in their favour.

They played some sensational football across the group stage campaign, enjoying 73% average possession and keeping two clean sheets in three matches, with six different players scoring.

This season has already brought PSG a historic quadruple, with triumphs in Ligue 1 and a first-ever UEFA Champions League crown.

Luis Enrique hands out Inter Miami warning

Ahead of the clash, Enrique had high praise for Messi, but issued a stern warning to his squad.

“For me, without doubt, Lionel Messi is the best football player in history,” Enrique told reporters.

“Messi’s prime has lasted 10-15 years, he’s the benchmark for the best player in history. His longevity over so many years, competing at the highest level every three days. I’ve seen Messi do things in training that belong to another breed, incredible things.”

Yet the admiration came with a tactical alert.

“If we want to stop Messi, it’s not possible with just one player.

“We need to defend collectively. Everyone must be ready to defend, everyone must be ready to pass and keep the ball.”

Inter Miami are still unbeaten in the tournament and finished second in Group A behind Palmeiras with Messi’s free-kick against Porto also contributing to their superb run.
