It hasn’t been a great week for Bayern Munich as their primary summer target, Florian Wirtz, is reportedly heading towards Liverpool.
To add to the misery, Leroy Sane may also leave the German outfit for free after he has reportedly rejected the club’s contract offer.
Amid all of this, Bayern Munich are keen on securing a left-winger and they have been linked with a few names in the market. AC Milan’s Rafael Leao and Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma are the two players who have been consistently linked with the German champions.
While there are other names in the mix, these two may well be at the top of Bayern’s shortlist for the summer transfer window.
Recently, Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus came up with a suggestion in his column for Sky Sports Germany. He urged the Bavarians to sign Leao due to his versatility to play as a winger and also double down as a striker if the need arises.
“I believe FC Bayern needs a breath of fresh air on the left wing. Rafael Leão would be a good solution. The Portuguese international mostly played on the left wing for Milan, but he can also play as a center forward, which would be important, as Bayern needs a backup for Kane when he needs a break,” Matthaus wrote.
Leao is probably Milan’s most prized possession, but after missing out on the Champions League, there are reports that they may be forced to sell players. Also, the Portuguese winger is tipped to leave Serie A this summer.

What could be the pricetag for Rafael Leao?
Leao is currently contracted to Milan until 2028 and any team pursuing him will need to spend a significant amount to secure his signature. The Portuguese joined Milan back in 2019 and soon developed into one of their best players.
However, things changed dramatically when he fell out with former Milan manager Paulo Fonseca. His relationship with the Milan management hasn’t improved even after Sérgio Conceição’s arrival.
As per reports via Corriere dello Sport, none of his differences with the club would bring down the valuation that Milan will seek for the Portugal international. Leao has a €175 million release clause, and while it is unrealistic for anyone to pay that much, Milan have set a €130 million initial price tag.
Apart from Bayern, Leao has attracted interest from the Premier League and also from the Saudi Pro League. Clubs like Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr are ready to offer Leão €25 million per year. However, Bayern and Arsenal reportedly have no intention of matching such numbers.
Understandably, there’s a lot of hype around the Portuguese winger, but he hasn’t been at his best this season with 12 goals and 10 assists in 50 appearances for the Rossoneri across all competitions. This has been his worst output in the last four seasons.
