Bayern Munich have endured a frustrating summer transfer window with plenty of missed transfer targets for Vincent Kompany.
However, with the additions of Luis Diaz, Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah, the Bavarians have a solid-looking lineup to defend their Bundesliga crown in the 2025/26 season.
The question among most fans centres on their ability to compete in Europe after their exit in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League last season.
Bayern Munich have released 11 players this summer, and in return have only signed three, with Harry Kane and Manuel Neuer asked the club hierarchy to bring in more new faces.
Despite issues with squad depth, former captain Lothar Mattaus still has real faith in the squad and he feels they are too powerful in Bundesliga – while also backing them to lift the Champions League crown.
“The question of who will be the German champion is easy to answer – clearly it’s Bayern,” the club legend stated in an interview with Kicker.

“If they stay injury-free, they can compete among the top four in Europe and win the Champions League.”
What did Lothar Matthaus say about Luis Diaz’s move to Bayern?
Diaz impressed on his debut at Bayern Munich, scoring a crucial goal in their 2-1 win over Stuttgart in the DFL Supercup last weekend.
While Matthaus has always lauded the Colombian, he isn’t happy with the transfer fee the German champions paid to sign him from Liverpool.
“The arrival of Luis Díaz, a 28-year-old player Liverpool wanted to sell because he wasn’t renewing his contract, for €75m ($87.6m) isn’t really great,” Matthaus told BILD.
“The Colombian certainly has speed and quality, so he’ll do well and can replace Leroy Sane, but if the club were honest with themselves, they’d admit he certainly wasn’t first-choice.
“After Nico Williams, Rafael Leao, and Jamie Gittens, Díaz was number four on the list of targets. I don’t see any real replacement for Kane, that’s a risk.”
Diaz will be a vital player for Bayern Munich in their Champions League quest this season, after back-to-back quarterfinal exits in the UCL and FIFA Club World Cup in 2024/25.
