Liverpool vs. Newcastle United lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news, injuries: Black-and-blue Mac Allister ready

Liverpool will seek to take another big step towards the Premier League title when they entertain Newcastle United on Wednesday.

The Reds went 11 points clear at the summit with Sunday’s authoritative 2-0 win at Manchester City. Arne Slot’s team have played a game more than nearest challengers Arsenal, who face a tricky trip to Nottingham Forest during this midweek round of fixtures.

Newcastle are firmly in the hunt for UEFA Champions League qualification and have the chance to put a marker down ahead of facing Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on March 16.

The Sporting News takes a look at the latest team news and predicted starting lineups for this match.

Alexis Mac Allister emerged from the victory at the Etihad Stadium with bruising around his eye and cheek but Slot told his pre-match news conference that the Argentina midfielder was expected to train on Tuesday and be ready to face Newcastle.

Cody Gakpo returned from the bench at the weekend and might be ready to start, possibly in place of Dominik Szoboszlai, who was exhausted after his exertions in Manchester.

Conor Bradley will remain out “for a few weeks” according to his manager, alongside fellow defender Joe Gomez.

Liverpool predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas — Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Jones — Salah, Diaz, Gakpo

Injured: Bradley (muscle), Gomez (hamstring)
Suspended: None

Eddie Howe has a decision to make over influential defender Sven Botman, who he deems to be “close” after his latest knee setback. Otherwise, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are likely to continue at centre-back despite Newcastle shipping seven goals in their past two Premier League matches.

If Botman is available, Howe could revert to the back three he used to see off Arsenal in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal. Emil Krafth is also an option to make that shape a possibility.

Influential midfielder Joelinton remains out.

Newcastle predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Dubravka (GK) — Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall — Guimaraes, Tonali, Willock — Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Injured: Joelinton (knee), Botman (knee, doubt), Lascelles (knee)
Suspended: None.
