Liverpool vs. Man United final score: Premier League result, stats as Amad Diallo snatches draw in sensational Anfield showdown

Liverpool missed their chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League as old foes Manchester United sealed a dramatic late 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The Red Devils worked overtime to keep Liverpool out in the opening half with Rasmus Hojlund denied by Alisson in the sole opportunity in the first 45 minutes.

However, as the rain began to pelt down after the break, a flood of goals joined the deluge on Merseyside as Lisandro Martinez crashed home from a tight angle.

The expected Liverpool rally was swift, as Cody Gakpo fired home Alexis Mac Allister’s clever throughball to level the contest for Arne Slot’s hosts.

Mohammed Salah kept his cool in the rain to blast home an 18th Premier League goal of the season from the penalty spot as Liverpool looked to set to ease away and move eight points clear of Arsenal at the top of the standings, but there was to be a late twist.

Despite the odds being against them late on, a dogged United stayed in the game, and a familiar Red Devils hero emerged in the closing stages.

Amad Diallo famously scored a 120th-minute winner for United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford last season, and the Ivorian grabbed his chance once more on Merseyside to snatch a battling point for Ruben Amorim.

They should really have left with all three, Harry Maguire spurning a glorious opportunity in the dying minutes, but the result — and the performance — will still be welcome relief as United’s four-game losing streak ended.

Liverpool vs. Man United lineups, team news

The hosts have been without defender Ibrahima Konate since the start of December due to a knee injury. His replacement Joe Gomez went off before halftime of the West Ham win with a hamstring problem.

“Joe is not in a good place when it comes to his injury, he’s out for a few weeks for sure,” Slot told a pre-match news conference, before confirming Konate and fellow defensive absentee Conor Bradley were set to return to training for the first time on Friday. It’s still most likely that this game comes too soon for either.

The biggest tactical question for Slot is whether to stick with his in-form attacking trio or bring Diogo Jota into the XI to replace either Luis Diaz or Cody Gakpo.

The biggest problem for Amorim in his early Manchester United spell has been finding the right mix of starters. He was forced to change up the formation early in the midweek loss to Newcastle as he hooked Joshua Zirkzee for an extra midfielder, and getting it right from the start will be critical in this match.

The introduction of Kobbie Mainoo had a positive impact, and Amorim could be swayed into starting the England midfielder here. Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are both back from suspension having been sorely missed against Newcastle.

Alejandro Garnacho has still yet to see the starting lineup under the new United boss, but could be considered too after his bright showing off the bench midweek. Marcus Rashford is ill and will not feature at Anfield after missing training this week.
