Liverpool vs. Everton live score: Premier League result, updates, stats from Anfield Merseyside derby

Liverpool are closing in on the Premier League title but local pride is at stake against Everton at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s runaway league leaders were pegged back to a 2-2 draw by their neighbours when James Tarkowski smashed home an incredible 98th-minute equaliser in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

This is Liverpool’s first match since widespread reports emerged claiming homegrown star Trent Alexander-Arnold has agreed to join Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of this season.

Liverpool vs. Everton live updates, highlights, and commentary

54 mins: Harrison’s pass through is overhit. Now back come Liverpool. We have a basketball game! Jota finds a little space to turn in the box but his shot is blocked.

53 mins: Fizzing attempt by Gravenberch that’s beaten away by Pickford. Branthwaite with a brave diving header behind in the face of Salah’s studs. Mac Allister outswinger but Everton break…

52 mins: Another decent counter-attacking situation for Everton. Alcaraz can’t find Doucoure with his cutback. It almost reaches Mykolenko, then Harrison’s deflected attempt is kept in by Kelleher.

50 mins: Jones with a cute pass to Jota, whose shot is repelled by Pickford before the offside flag goes up.

47 mins: Tarkowski heads behind when he didn’t really have to. Mac Allister’s inswinging corner is cleared behind for another. Everton deal with the second corner.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We’re back underway, no changes for either side. Liverpol kicking towards the Kop.

Halftime

The corner is cleared but now Everton have a free-kick on the left. Floated in…. oh and Alcaraz should do better! No goals but plenty of talking points. The visitors should probably be winning this, with Beto hitting the post and having another ruled out for offside. Liverpool short of their best as they have been for a little while.

45+3 mins: Doucoure looks for Beto, who gets the better of Konate. He’s been a handful for the Liverpool centre-backs. Alcaraz’s shot is deflected over.

45 mins: Salah sets the ball back to Gravenberch. His drive takes as deflection off Tarkowski’s heel but that loops the ball kindly into Pickford’s gloves.

43 mins: More last-ditch stuff as Pickford doesn’t get there and a cross scoots through everyone for Robertson to slice wide.

42 mins: Diaz capitalists on another poor defensive moment from O’Brien. Everton’s concentration might be slipping as halftime approaches. Salah’s ball into the goalmouth is hacked clear.

40 mins: Garner crunches into Robertson to win a corner and shoves him for good measure. The ref tells him to cool his jets.

39 mins: Slack play from Beto almost lets Jota in but Tarkowski is there to mop up with some help from Branthwaite.

38 mins: Liverpool committing both full-backs to their attacks but Everton keeping them at arm’s length. Salah wins a corner on the right.

33 mins: BETO HITS THE POST!!! Oh, the Everton forward did so well. Wonderful control and poise to get away from Van Dijk and through on goal. You could argue he messed up the easiest bit, crunching his shot against the left upright with only Kelleher to beat.

28 mins: Chance at the far post that Premier League top scorer Salah can’t snaffle. Nice little spell for Liverpool.

27 mins: Robertoson slips a nice pass to Jota, whose cross from the left channel is blocked by Tarkowski. The ball fall back to the Portugal forward, who fires over from a tight angle.

25 mins: Ooffff, Pickford comes for a Liverpool corner, doesn’t get there. The defence mops things up before Van Dijk thwarts the Everton counter. That’s a pretty cynical foul and he’s probably fortunate not to be booked.

21 mins: On we go, Beto was just off. Given what’s gone before, a Tarkowski assist would have gone down well…

20 mins: GOOOAA…. No! Beto darts onto a raking ball from Tarkowski and prods past Kelleher. It’s brought back for offside. Ohhhhh that’s tight!

18 mins: Jota wants a free-kick in a similar position. Nothing doing. Back come Liverpool and win a corner.

14 mins: Finally wer’re ready and Mac Allister is going to soldier on. Szoboszlai bangs the free-kick over the far top corner.

12 mins: A VAR check clears Tarkowski and the yellow card remains. He’s a little fortunate that wasn’t upgraded. Mac Allister still down having treatment.

11 mins: Ooohhhhh, goodness me! Here’s some derby day spice. Tarkowski gets to the ball before Mac Allister but absolutely yahoos through him on the follow through. It’s a yellow card, for now…

10 mins: Jota gets the ball out of his feet and Branthwaite is forced into an excellent last-ditch block.

9 mins: Alcaraz goes down in the area, appearing to seek contact from Jones. He’d pretty much given up on that penalty claim by the time gravity completed its job. Nothing in it.

4 mins: Branthwaite floats one out to the left, hoping to test Jones but it’s slightly overhit and Mykolenko can’t keep it in play.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Off we go and Jones is straight into his work, driving down the right flank.

5 mins before kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. Some noise whipping around Anfield. Here they come.

30 mins before kickoff: Everton enter this derby in fine form, unbeaten in nine matches. David Moyes has been speaking to Sky Sports.

I think we have been on a decent run. Ready to go again. We would all love to get results at Anfield. We have always come here and made it difficult, hopefully we can do that again tonight.

We want to get back to real consistency. We are trying to improve all the time.

We all have to play well to get a result. Liverpool are top of the league for a reason and we have to come here and make it as hard as we can.

1 hr 5 mins before kickoff: David Moyes has named the same Everton XI that drew 1-1 with West Ham a couple of weeks ago. That means Vitaly Mykolenko has recovered from the thigh problem he sustained in international duty with Ukraine.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: Here’s the Liverpool team. It could be another interesting Merseyside derby for Curtis Jones, who starts at right-back in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley. Jarell Quansah is on the bench. Alisson hasn’t recovered from the concussion he suffered on international duty with Brazil, which means Caoimhin Kelleher starts in goal.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: It will be interesting to see how high passions run tonight, given that combustile Goodison clash was only seven weeks ago. Arne Slot earned himself a touchline bad, while Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones got themselves sent off after instigating a brawl. Never mind the game, I’m quite looking forward to the pre-match handshakes.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of the 246th Merseyside derby at Anfield. The previous encounter at Goodison Park was a drama-filled instant classic. More of the same, please!
