Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, beating Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race for the highly-rated Brazilian.
The Reds are looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of the next season, and Gomes has emerged as a prime target.
The 23-year-old has been impressive since joining Wolves from Flamengo, drawing interest from several top European clubs.
However, according to reports from Brazil (backed via Anfield Watch), Liverpool are leading the race and are close to finalizing a deal.

How much will Gomes cost Liverpool?
Gomes has been on the radar of multiple clubs, including Manchester United, but it appears Liverpool are making swift moves to secure his services.
Reports suggest that the deal could be worth around £50 million ($64 million), with Flamengo set to receive a percentage of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause.
Brazilian outlet Gazete do Urubu claims that Liverpool are in advanced talks, with a deal nearing completion.
“They suggest several major European clubs want to sign Gomes, as well as Manchester United, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League. It’s Liverpool, though, who lead this race.”
The report also highlights that Gomes’ former club Flamengo stands to earn 14% of any profit Wolves make from his sale, making the transfer a significant financial boost for the Brazilian club.

What Wolves’ sporting director said about Gomes?
Wolves’ sporting director Matt Hobbs has previously praised Gomes and acknowledged that his performances are attracting attention.
Speaking about him last year, Hobbs said, “The way he is playing, there will be clubs watching him for sure. I know there are. The perfect player for us might not be someone else’s perfect player but Joao fits here.”
Liverpool’s interest in Gomes aligns with their plans to reinforce their squad under Arne Slot.
With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk, the club is wasting no time in planning for the future.
If the deal goes through, it would mark another blow for Manchester United, who recently lost out on Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda to Chelsea.
As Liverpool look to build on their strong season, securing Gomes would be a statement signing for their midfield.
