Liverpool protect future interest as Ben Doak seals Bournemouth switch

Liverpool’s summer of change is set to continue with Ben Doak heading to Bournemouth, after Scotland international completed his medical, after the two clubs reached agreement over the weekend.

Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam confirmed the development, as Doak moves on in search of a new challenge.

Ben Doak has completed the first part of his Bournemouth medical after they agreed a deal with Liverpool over the weekend.

“The total package is worth £25m [$33m] and Liverpool have a buy-back option.”

The 19-year-old was left out of Liverpool’s opening-day squad to face the Cherries, a decision that underlined how far talks had progressed, as Andoni Iraola looks to bolster his own squad.

Bournemouth have been searching for a new option put wide – following Dango Ouattara’s £42.5m [$57m]  switch to Brentford – and Iraola moved quickly amid wider Premier League interest in Doak.

Why Liverpool demanded Doak clause in Bournemouth talks

Doak joined Liverpool from Celtic in 2022, for £600,000 [$812,000] and quickly built a reputation as one of the brightest graduates in the Reds academy, but his progress has been blocked by the enduring brilliance of Mohamed Salah.

A loan spell at Middlesbrough last season, brought him three goals and seven assists in 24 appearances, before injury cut his campaign short. Arne Slot utilised him during preseason where only Salah, Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha played more minutes.

The Reds decision to include a buy-back clause shows how highly Slot and his staff rate Doak, while the club also recognise Salah’s long-term successor is still uncertain, and the young winger could compete for that role in future.

His departure marks Liverpool’s eighth exit of the window, taking Slot’s total sales to £216m [$292m].

Bournemouth, who began their season with defeat at Anfield, hope to hand Doak his debut against Wolves on August 23 as they chase a first win of the season.
