Liverpool linked with Premier League defensive midfielder due to relegation threat

Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as they look to strengthen their squad.

The Brazilian has caught the Reds’ attention with his blend of creativity, tough tackling, and ability on the ball, making him a strong candidate for a summer move.

Reports suggest that Wolves’ ongoing financial struggles and their fight to avoid relegation could force the club into selling key players like Gomes.

If Wolves fail to stay in the Premier League, the “door could open” for Liverpool to secure the 23-year-old, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.

How Joao Gomes could be a perfect fit for Liverpool

Joao Gomes is seen as an ideal addition for Liverpool. At 23, he fits the profile of a player who can deliver immediately and grow into a long-term asset.

Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown claimed that both Liverpool and the Red Devils have been tracking Gomes closely. However, a January move seems unlikely.

Gomes remains vital for Wolves as they battle to avoid the drop. Heading into the latest round of matches, they were sitting just outside the relegation zone, level on points and goal difference with 18th-placed Ipswich Town.

Back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United dented Wolves’ resurgence under manager Vitor Pereira. With their Premier League survival under serious threat, clubs like Liverpool are keeping tabs on Gomes and other key players, including Matheus Cunha, for potential summer deals.

Midfield has been a concern under Arne Slot. Behind Ryan Gravenberch, their options lack depth and quality.

After missing out on Martin Zubimendi, who is now likely heading to Arsenal, the Reds are exploring alternatives. Gomes appears to be a top choice.
