
Liverpool have confirmed their plans for a preseason return following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
The Portugal international was killed in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva on July 3 in Northern Spain with the club and the wider footballing world left shocked and saddened.
Thousands of fans have left flowers and emotional tributes at Anfield in recent days with the funeral of the Liverpool striker taking place in his hometown of Gondomar on July 5.
Reds captain Virgil van Dijk was amongst a host of first-team stars in attendance at the funeral, with former captain Jordan Henderson also there, alongside international teammates Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva.
With the majority of Arne Slot’s squad still travelling back from Portugal, the club have made an updated decision on their preseason return, after the initial date of July 4 was pushed back.
Selected members of the squad had been given until July 7 – due to international commitments at the start of June – but that has been revised for Tuesday July 8, for all players.

Liverpool’s preseason schedule
Liverpool will continue to offer updates on how their summer plans will unfold and an revision of their preseason schedule will be confirmed in due course.
The Reds first preseason game is scheduled against Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13 –Â but that could be rescheduled – ahead of a trip to South East Asia to face AC Milan and Yokohama FC, and an Anfield friendly with Athletic Club on August 4.

Slot and Liverpool hierarchy will not rush the players back, to ensure Jota’s teammates are given time to grieve and process his passing, and tributes will be paid to the Portugal international on their return.
The FA have confirmed plans to commemorate the 28-year-old in Liverpool’s FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace on August 10 with similar plans in place for Liverpool’s first home game of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on August 15.
