Liverpool are on the brink of securing a club record transfer deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz.
Germany international Wirtz has set out his desire to leave the BayArena this summer following Xabi Alonso’s trip back to Real Madrid.
Multiple stars are on course to leave Leverkusen this summer, with Jeremie Frimpong already completing a move to Arne Slot’s Premier League champions, after Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Alonso in Madrid.
Despite widespread rumours of Wirtz already agreeing personal terms over a switch to Anfield, Leverkusen have refused to budge in their desire to bring in a maximum fee, which has elongated negotiations.
Liverpool remain in constant talks with Leverkusen and the 22-year-old hinted at his excitement over a move to Merseyside after Germany’s UEFA Nations League defeat to Portugal on June 4.
Previous reports from the Daily Mail claimed Liverpool were prepared to make a final offer to Leverkusen at the start of June – after seeing two bids rejected – but a fresh twist has since emerged.

Liverpool agree final Wirtz fee
A deal for Wirtz will break Liverpool’s current transfer record which is set at the £72m [$98m] they paid Benfica for Darwin Nunez in 2022.
Liverpool will also hand Wirtz a ‘long-term’ deal – rumoured to be for at least five years until 2030 – with the final fee the last hurdle to navigate.
Leverkusen’s opening position set an asking price of £100m [$135m] upfront with £25m [$34m] in performance-related add-ons across his contract.
The Bundesliga giants turned down an opening £110m [$148m] to hold out for £125m [$170m] with Liverpool aiming for a final compromise.
The Reds hierarchy were ready to stretch to £100m [$135m] with £18m [$24.5m] in add-ons – which came in at £7m [$9.5m] short of Leverkusen’s position.
That was viewed as Liverpool final attempt, but Leverkusen have continued to dig in, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming the talks have come full circle, with Liverpool set to pay a final total £125m [$170m] inclusive of all addons.

The initial fee will still be around £100m [$135m] – so falls short of an EPL record – with the add-ons based on how well Wirtz performs for Liverpool domestically and in Europe.
A deal will also be delayed until the transfer window reopens on June 16 with Liverpool’s first preseason game against Preston on July 13.
