Lionel Messi drops major hint about 2026 World Cup and future with Argentina

Lionel Messi may not be hanging up his Argentina boots just yet.

The 38-year-old icon has hinted he could play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico — if, as he says, his legs and lungs agree with the plan.

In a rare interview with NBC’s Tom Llamas, Messi opened up about his future with both Argentina and Inter Miami, just days after signing a new deal that keeps him in MLS until 2028.

That’s right — the man who has already conquered the world once might just be gearing up for one last dance.

“The truth is that yes, it’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup,” Messi told Llamas.

“And I would like to be there. To feel well and to be an important part of helping my national team, if I am there. And I’m going to assess that on a day-to-day basis when I start preseason next year with Inter and see if I can really be 100%.”

He added, “We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it on the field again is spectacular because it’s always a dream to play with the national team… hopefully God will allow me to do it once again.”

Will Lionel Messi still graze in 2026 World Cup?

(getty)

Messi will turn 39 during the next World Cup, but if his current form is anything to go by, Father Time might have to wait his turn.

The Inter Miami star recently secured the MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals and led his team to another playoff run — not bad for someone supposedly past his prime.

He’s also extended his contract through 2028, showing no signs of slowing down. “Honestly, it wasn’t a difficult decision,” Messi said.

“I felt really good during the year. I’m happy living in Miami, as is my family, and honestly, the decision was easy.”

Still, the big question remains: can he pull off one more miracle with Argentina? Fans are already dreaming of seeing the little magician weaving through defenders in North America, rewriting history one last time.

Messi knows the decision won’t just be emotional — it’ll be physical. “Sometimes your mind is faster than your legs,” he said, acknowledging the realities of time. But then again, when has Messi ever played by time’s rules?

For now, all eyes are on Miami’s playoff chase and Argentina’s road to 2026. If his body holds up, the world might just get another chance to see the GOAT graze on football’s biggest stage.
