Ligue 1 assist king confirms exit as Liverpool lead transfer chase

Liverpool fans are hoping for some exciting new arrivals at Anfield this summer as Arne Slot fine tunes his Premier League title winning squad.

The Dutch coach has been low-key when asked about his summer plans and he is not expected to sanction major changes.

Slot has opted for evolution over revolution on Merseyside, as he looks to build on Jurgen Klopp’s blueprint, and keep Liverpool in a position to challenge domestically and in the UEFA Champions League.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid means a new right-back is set to come in as Slot chases down Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Other squad tweaks are expected including a likely exit for goal keeper Caoimhin Kelleher with five Premier League sides reportedly considering moves for the Irishman.

Slot will look for bargains and he could have an ideal candidate in Lyon’s attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki.

Rayan Cherki’s Lyon contract, transfer value, stats

21-year-old Cherki has confirmed he will leave Lyon despite his contract running until June 2026.

Cherki signed a 12-month extension last summer, as Lyon looked to protect themselves from a free transfer exit, but his release clause is rumoured to be around £19m [$25m].

That means Liverpool will not need to pay an inflated transfer fee to sign one of the highest-rated young stars in Ligue 1, if they can hold off rumoured competition from Paris Saint-German.

Cherki has been tight-lipped over his destination, as Lyon sealed a Conference League qualification spot on the final day of the 2024/25 French top-flight season, but he confirmed his intentions.

“I’m ready to try a new chapter in my career. I give my thanks to Lyon, the coach, the staff, the president, my teammates and all people at the club,” he said after the season finale.

Cherki’s versatility to play across multiple attacking roles is a major pull factor for Slot and his stats from 2024/25 show just what a creative machine he is for Lyon – in a league packed with forward talent.

11 Ligue 1 assists places him joint-top of that metric – with only Mohamed Salah managing more for Liverpool this season – he is also No.1 for passes into the opposition penalty area [77] and shot-creating action [146] – as per data from Fbref.com.
