Lexie Hull Opens Up About Playing Without Caitlin Clark

Despite the Saturday loss, the Indiana Fever have been turning heads lately, and not just because of Caitlin Clark. Over the past week, the Fever have picked up two impressive wins against elite WNBA teams. They knocked off the Minnesota Lynx, champions of the Commissioner’s Cup, with a convincing 74-59 victory. Then they followed that up by steamrolling the Las Vegas Aces, 81-54.

What makes these wins even more eye-catching is that they came without their star rookie on the floor. Caitlin Clark has been out the last four games due to a left groin injury, leaving Indiana to find a way forward without the player who has been their centerpiece all season.

Lexie Hull spoke about the team’s recent surge and the dynamic within the locker room during Clark’s absence. Her comments reflected a group that’s grown more confident and connected.

“I think we’re all feeling good. The energy is high,” Hull said. “We had a really good win in Minnesota and got to celebrate it together. That helps our chemistry. All the stuff off the court fuels us too. We’re having fun together. And doing this without one of our best players makes it even more special. We’re proud of what we’ve done.”

Hull, who was taken sixth overall by the Fever in the 2022 draft, came into the league after a standout college career at Stanford. She earned three All-Pac-12 honors, won a national championship in 2021, and picked up multiple academic and leadership awards during her senior year.

Now in her fourth season in the pros, Hull is having a breakout year. She’s averaging career highs in points (8.6), rebounds (4.9), assists (1.7), and steals (1.2) per game. Her reliable play has helped keep the Fever afloat while Clark recovers.

Clark’s injury lingers

Clark has been sidelined since June 24, when her groin issue was first reported. While she was initially considered day-to-day, she has now missed almost two full weeks of action. Before the injury, Clark was logging big minutes and averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game.

Even with Clark out, the Fever have managed to stay competitive. They’ve gone 5-5 without her this season. That includes a signature win over the Lynx, which came in the middle of the Commissioner’s Cup stretch.

Lexie Hull’s leadership and steady presence have been key during this stretch. The Fever have shown they can compete against the best, even without their brightest star. And when Clark returns, Indiana might be even more dangerous.
