Lakers wake up to encouraging Luka Doncic contract news after Marcus Smart signing

Luka Doncic has been steering the ship, and he’s happy about the direction it’s going.

The Athletic’s Dan Woike previously reported that Doncic was involved of the recruitment of Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to the Los Angeles Lakers.

And now, NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that concerns about Doncic’s long-term future with the Lakers have “dissipated considerably.

Smart has not officially signed yet. He has to clear waivers after being bought out by the Wizards. But by Wednesday, he should be able to officially join the Lakers.

Doncic is eligible for a contract extension of four years and $229 million on Aug. 2.

The Lakers have seemingly taken a clear shift this offseason toward allowing Doncic to help call the shots rather than LeBron James. That has appeared to create just a bit of unrest from the James camp, although right now, he’s not going anywhere, either.

Los Angeles has the chance at a big season ahead. A starting lineup that includes Doncic, James, Ayton, Austin Reaves and potentially Smart could be a very good one.

The offseason signing of Jake LaRavia also has Lakers fans excited for how good of a shooter he is.

But the most important thing in this new era of Lakers basketball is keeping Luka happy, and it sounds like they’ve done just that.
