The Los Angeles Lakers made the deal of the decade when they acquired Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. Unfortunately, their title aspirations hit a snag when their trade for Mark Williams was rescinded after he failed his physical.
Because Anthony Davis was in the trade, the Lakers are a little short on big men. To compensate for the issue, The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie suggested that the Lakers add a Philadelphia 76ers alum (by cutting another Sixers alum) to fill the void.
“My recommendation for the Lakers would be to cut Christian Wood and Markieff Morris and sign (Will) Magnay and (Mo) Bamba unless a bigger name surprisingly gets cut loose,” Vecenie wrote.
Bamba played for the Sixers in 2024. Coincidentally, he came off a brief half-season stint with the Lakers the season prior. Wood is also a Sixers alum, though his time with the Sixers goes further back. He started his NBA career with them in 2015, though he only played for them for one season.
For context, though, Bamba is available because the Utah Jazz waived him after they acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Lakers don’t have the best options available, but that’s what happens with the buyout market. It is basically the leftovers of the NBA trade deadline. If Bamba were that good, he wouldn’t be available, period. At the same time, if that counts for anything, he might be the best the Lakers can hope for based on his familiarity with the team.
This isn’t the first time the Lakers have been urged to add a Sixers alum since making the Doncic trade. If the Lakers want to have a chance at their 18th title, they may have to turn to Sixers alumni going forward to make that happen.
