The Los Angeles Lakers have performed well since acquiring Luka Doncic on Feb. 2, winning six of their eight contests and moving up in the Western Conference standings.
As the Lakers inch closer to the postseason, they could bolster their roster by adding a 39-year-old San Antonio Spurs guard who’s appeared in 149 playoff games.
“Chris Paul is currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs,” Hoops Habit’s Cal Durrett wrote last Saturday.
“However, after the season-ending injury to Victor Wembanyama, they could go in a different direction and look to tank to secure a top-10 pick to help build around Wembanyama going forward.”
“That direction could also include coming to a mutual agreement to waive Paul, allowing the future Hall of Famer to sign with a contender ahead of the playoffs.”
“If that were to happen, then that could pave the way for Paul to finally join the Lakers. That would be incredibly ironic with Paul previously having been traded to the Lakers back in 2012 only for the trade to be vetoed by the league. That set up another trade to send him to the L.A. (Los Angeles) Clippers.”
Although Paul wouldn’t give the Lakers a clear edge over their competition, he would be a solid role asset who would likely have to accept a bench role for JJ Redick’s club.
Paul, whose time is limited in the big leagues, can still probe defenses at a high level, make the correct reads on the move, and lead by example in Year 20.
The ex-Clippers point guard averages 9.0 points and 8.0 assists per contest, shooting 40.6% from the field and 35.4% from downtown this season.
With Paul serving as a steady hand for Los Angeles and being motivated to silence his doubters by winning a championship before he retires, the Lakers could complete an underrated signing heading into a critical part of the year.
