Lakers predicted to acquire former $159,000,000 Thunder star via buyout to complement LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers look like a true contender in the Western Conference, especially after defeating the 2023 NBA champion Denver Nuggets by 23 points.

As the superstar tandem of LeBron James and Luka Doncic continue learning how to mesh, it could be in the Lakers’ best interest to add a “glue guy” veteran. A fantastic option could become available via the buyout market, former Oklahoma City Thunder star guard Chris Paul.

Paul is a possible buyout candidate because of the San Antonio Spurs’ blockbuster trade for guard De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama being sidelined for the remainder of the season. This combination of factors could lead to a mutual parting between Paul and San Antonio, allowing the 12-time All-Star to pursue his first title.

Fadeaway World predicts the Lakers to jump at the opportunity to sign Paul if he becomes available.

“The Spurs suddenly find themselves in an awkward position—too talented to tank naturally but not competitive enough to make a real playoff push without their franchise star,” Fadeaway World’s Eddie Bitar wrote. “It took over a decade, but Chris Paul might finally get his shot to wear the purple and gold.”

The 39-year-old’s prime spanned across many seasons, dating back to his time with the New Orleans Hornets all the way to his tenure with the Thunder and Phoenix Suns. This, along with praised leadership, allowed him to ink a four-year, $159 million contract even well into his 30s.

Paul has found success with almost every organization he’s been a part of, and there’s no reason to assume that would change in L.A. He could complement James to perfection, as the two are long-time friends as well as two of the league’s most adaptable players.
