LeBron James’ contract with the Los Angeles Lakers runs through the end of the 2025-26 season.
And while maybe in the past that would’ve been a worry, NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Lakers aren’t bothered by that.
“The threat of him leaving Lakerland next summer is no threat at all now,” writes Stein.
That’s because the Lakers’ “widely presumed preferred scenario” is to let LeBron’s contract drop off their books after this season.
James is set to earn $52.6 million after opting-in to his player option for the season ahead.
This doesn’t preclude the trade rumors that exist, but it does suggest that no extension will be forthcoming.

Unless something changes, Stein’s report suggests that the season ahead will be James’ last in Los Angeles, one way or the other.
Whether there is a retirement looming or a new team, or a reunion with an old team, James’ future is hurtling quickly ahead toward a big decision.
