Lakers could hit jackpot by swapping Austin Reaves for $165 million Heat star

Life was good for the Los Angeles Lakers early last month.

Former Dallas Mavericks phenom Luka Doncic, and Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams were slated to join the Lake Show via two blockbuster trades.

Although Doncic’s groundbreaking Feb. 2 deal was successful, Williams’ inability to pass his physical resulted in a nixed Feb. 6 trade, leaving Los Angeles without a high-level big man.

The franchise could hit the jackpot in free agency by swapping Austin Reaves for a standout Miami Heat frontcourt contributor.

Unfortunately, Bam Adebayo and the Heat have endured a drama-filled 2024-25 campaign thanks to the lengthy Jimmy Butler saga.

Butler, who was suspended by Miami three times in January, passionately voiced his displeasure with the franchise during the first half of the season.

To appease their most versatile asset, the Heat traded Butler to the Golden State Warriors on Feb. 5 in a compelling multi-team deal.

Despite experiencing constant distractions, Adebayo has enjoyed a productive season with Miami, exhibiting his lethal face-up game, low post-physicality, and shot-altering chops nightly.

The Kentucky product averages 17.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest this season, shooting 48.8% from the field in 63 games.

Still, with Miami parting ways with a fierce two-way stud in Butler, who guided the Heat to two NBA finals appearances, it’s unclear if the organization will remain competitive with its current roster.

It could be a matter of time before Adebayo requests a trade from the underachieving 29-36 Heat, allowing Los Angeles to pursue the three-time All-Star this summer.

With Adebayo, the Lakers would serve as a multi-dimensional forward/center capable of catching Doncic’s lobs in pick-and-roll situations and making winning plays on both ends.

Reaves, the Lakers’ breakout star and No. 3 scoring option, would likely have to be featured in a deal to pique the Heat’s interest.

If the Lakers believe Adebayo could drastically improve their frontcourt, they may consider ditching Reaves for the former McDonald’s All-American during the offseason.
