Ladd McConkey injury updates: Latest news on Chargers WR’s status for Week 3

The Los Angeles Chargers’ top wide receiver, Ladd McConkey, popped up on the injury report on Wednesday, leaving his status for the Week 3 game against the Denver Broncos up in the air.

McConkey avoided the injury report over the first two weeks of the season, so this is a new injury for the second-year receiver, who didn’t appear to be hampered by anything during the Week 2 game.

Over two games, McConkey has tallied 11 receptions on 14 targets for 122 receiving yards. While he is widely considered Justin Herbert’s No. 1 target, McConkey ranks third in receiving yards and second in receptions.

Here’s the latest update on McConkey’s status for Week 3.

UPDATE: Not only did McConkey return to practice on Thursday, he was a full participant. That puts to bed any fears about his Week 3 status.

UPDATE: Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports that McConkey was back at practice on Thursday afternoon.

We’ll get his official level of practice participation later in the day when the Chargers release their full injury report, but this is a great sign for his Week 3 availability.

END OF UPDATE

According to the Chargers’ Week 3 injury report, McConkey did not practice at all on Wednesday due to a biceps injury.

While not a great sign for his status for Sunday, there has been nothing to suggest McConkey won’t play against the Broncos.

Adding more optimism to the idea he’ll play in Week 3, the Chargers did just play a game on Monday, so load management may have factored into McConkey sitting Wednesday.

If McConkey is forced to sit in Week 3, the Chargers will lean more heavily on both Quentin Johnston and Keenan Allen, both of whom are already off to strong starts to the season.

Johnston has proven to be a reliable big-play threat over two games. The third-year wide receiver has three touchdowns, three receptions of 20-plus yards and is averaging a whopping 18.8 yards per reception.

Allen is showing he still has plenty left in the tank, as he’s recorded at least five catches and 61 yards in both games and has also scored a touchdown in each.

McConkey’s absence would likely mean more work for rookie wide receiver Tre Harris, although he’ll play third fiddle behind Johnston and Allen.
