Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has spent the majority of his offseason recovering from a torn ACL. Recently, the nine-time All-Star shared an update on how his recovery is going.
Recently, Irving went on a live stream and told viewers about where he has progressed in his recovery. Irving suffered the injury in early March, ending his season, and putting his status in jeopardy for a large portion of next season as well.
“I was in the gym, doing a little bit more. That’s the second update. I was in the gym, doing a little bit more,” Irving said. “I won’t tell you exactly what I was doing, because it’s all about incremental growth, but I can share with you all that there were some good days in the gym. I’m healing up great, five months post-surgery.”
Irving will take on more ball-handling duties when he returns
Irving was dealt to the Mavericks in the middle of the 2022-23 season, and has been a key piece of the team’s deep playoff runs since then. Irving played a massive role in Dallas’ run to the 2024 Finals, where they lost to the Boston Celtics. With Luka Doncic out of the picture, Irving can be expected to take on more ball-handling responsibilities upon his return.
Since joining the Mavericks, Irving is averaging 25.5 points per game, shooting 49 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range. He will join Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, and first-overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Cooper Flagg as the Mavericks look to contend for the title next season.
