Kylian Mbappe’s red card: Real Madrid star’s disciplinary record ahead of Arsenal and Barcelona clashes

Kylian Mbappe has been in sensational form for Real Madrid in his debut 2024/25 season in the Spanish capital.

The France international has netted 22 La Liga goals so far in Madrid with 33 bagged across all competitions since making a free transfer move from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Mbappe is chasing down Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski in the La Liga Golden Boot race but the Los Blancos No.9 has been hit by a major setback following his first red card in Spanish football.

Mbappe was dismissed on the 38-minute mark of Real Madrid’s league clash away at Alaves and he now faces a ban.

Kylian Mbappe’s first Real Madrid red card: How many games is he banned?

Match referee Juan Martinez Munuera instantly showed a red card to Mbappe as he caught Antonio Blanco after a reckless late challenge.

Mbappe has received four yellow cards so far this season, three in La Liga and one in the UEFA Champions League, but this is his first red card in Madrid.

La Liga rules vary over suspension length, but a red card immediately incurs a one-game ban, with the potential for more.

Jude Bellingham served a two-game suspension in La Liga earlier this season and that looks to be the most likely current outcome for Mbappe.

The challenge, and the referee’s decision will now be assessed by La Liga and the RFEF, before a final decision is made on how long Mbappe will be absent.

He is certain to miss next weekend’s home game with Athletic Club on April 20 and potentially the trip to Getafe three days later.

Can Kylian Mbappe play against Arsenal?

Mbappe’s red card at Alaves will have no impact on his participation in Real Madrid’s UCL quarterfinal second-leg with Arsenal on April 15.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team are trailing 3-0 from the first-leg, but as Mbappe’s ban will only apply to domestic games, he will be ready to face Arsenal.

He will also be eligible for Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final clash with Barcelona on April 26 as La Liga bans do not carry into cup competitions.

Kylian Mbappe’s red card record

Whilst this is Mbappe’s first red card at Real Madrid, it is not the first dismissal of his club career, after receiving four red cards at PSG.

The combined total number of games he was banned for registered at eight with two sets of three-game absences and two single-game suspensions.
