Kylian Mbappe to receive new Real Madrid shirt number after club legend’s exit

Kylian Mbappe is reportedly set to don a new shirt number at Real Madrid for the 2025/26 season.

Mbappe joined Los Blancos from Paris Saint-Germain on a five-year contract last summer, becoming the first player to wear the No. 9 shirt after Karim Benzema, who parted ways with Real Madrid in 2023.

The 26-year-old wears the No. 10 shirt for the France national team and  he initially wanted that number in the Spanish capital. However, that was blocked in 2024/25, as it belonged to former captain Luka Modric, who received it in the 2017.

Modric parted ways with Real Madrid after the FIFA Club World Cup – following the expiry of his contract – and joined AC Milan – with the iconic No. 10 shirt now vacant.

Now, several reports are suggesting Mbappe will take over the No. 10 shirt at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

What’s next for Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid?

Despite the team enduring an unimpressive run in the 2024/25 campaign, which ended in a second-place La Liga finish and no major trophies, Mbappe’s debut season was a individual positive.

Mbappe scored 44 goals across all competitions, winning the Pichichi Trophy for La Liga’s top scorer, and the coveted European Golden Boot.

Los Blancos are not participating in any preseason friendly matches as most of their break between campaigns was occupied by the Club World Cup.

Now, Mbappe and Real Madrid have a new season upcoming, starting with their opening La Liga match against Osasuna on August 19.
