The New York Knicks have one final veteran minimum spot left on their roster and are reportedly weighing their options between a high-upside player and a familiar face.
Ben Simmons, a three-time All-Star, is expected to attract interest from several suitors on the open market. Still, the 6-foot-10 guard has recently been linked to the Knicks as a potential low-cost addition.
Despite his well-documented scoring limitations, Simmons’ defensive versatility, rebounding and playmaking could make him an intriguing fit for New York. Alternatively, the Knicks could prioritize continuity and re-sign Landry Shamet, who spent the 2024-25 campaign in New York.
While it appears more likely the club would prefer Simmons, Shamet is still in the running for the final veteran minimum contract, according to Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media.
“If it were entirely up to them, they would likely sign veteran point guard Ben Simmons to secure that last piece,” he said. “Simmons is still undecided about his next move, but the Knicks provide a competitive platform and a defined backup role.”

The Knicks could look to Shamet for additional scoring off the bench, but with Miles McBride and Jordan Clarkson in the backcourt rotation, his role may be limited. Adding Simmons would give them size and attributes that address needs outside scoring.
However, as Wilson noted, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft could go elsewhere, which would leave Shamet as a strong candidate for the spot.
The 28-year-old guard logged a career low in minutes per game last season, during which he averaged 5.7 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.2 three-pointers across 15.2 minutes per game in 50 regular-season appearances.
