Knicks sign former Celtics Sixth Man of the Year to help Jalen Brunson win first title

The New York Knicks aren’t messing around in mid-September.

A day after signing a skilled long-range sniper (Landry Shamet), the franchise secured the services of a former Boston Celtics Sixth Man of the Year to help Jalen Brunson win his first title.

“Free agent guard Malcolm Brogdon has agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Knicks,” ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Friday. “Entering his 10th NBA season, the former Sixth Man of the Year gives the Knicks key backcourt depth and reserve playmaking.”

Brogdon was unquestionably a high-profile free agent entering the summer. The Virginia product has what it takes to elevate an organization looking to instill fear into the rest of the league, and he proved that while competing with the Celtics in 2022-23.

As a pivotal bench contributor on the Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown-led Boston squad, Brogdon could be depended upon to deliver when on the hardwood.

The high-IQ 6-foot-4 guard got the job done with the Celtics on both ends, harassing opponents on the perimeter while also delivering the goods offensively.

Brogdon averaged 14.9 points per game on 48.4% field goal shooting and 44.4% three-point shooting, allowing him to walk away with Sixth Man of the Year honors.

Brogdon, who only appeared in 24 contests with the Washington Wizards last season, should be prepared to embrace a similar role with the Knicks in Year 10.
