The New York Knicks have already made significant upgrades to their bench this offseason by signing Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, but they might not be done just yet.
Per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks view Malik Beasley as a potential option for the team during free agency. Notably, Beasley was previously under investigation by the FBI regarding a gambling issue, but he has since been cleared of any wrongdoing.
Beasley remains one of the top unrestricted free agents available on the market after a strong season with the Detroit Pistons. Last season, Beasley averaged 16.3 points per game, and shot 42 percent from beyond the arc, appearing in all 82 games (18 starts), and finishing second in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year voting.
The Knicks can only offer Beasley a minimum deal
The tricky part for the Knicks will be convincing Beasley to sign for the minimum, as that is all the team can offer him unless a trade is made. It was reported that Beasley previously had a three-year, $42 million deal on the table prior to the federal gambling investigation.
After enjoying one of the best seasons of his NBA career, it’ll be tough luring Beasley to the Knicks on such a cheap deal, especially considering the terms of the deal that he almost agreed upon already this offseason. Nonetheless, as the Knicks always do, they’ll keep tabs on the situation surrounding Beasley as they look to continue making upgrades to their overall depth for next season.
