The New York Knicks have been trying to add some extra ingredients to help them win their first title since 1973. Over the last few years, one of their calling cards has been adding Villanova alumni like Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges.
The opportunity to add another one will be there this offseason as Philadelphia 76ers point guard and Villanova alum Kyle Lowry will be an unrestricted free agent. Empire Sports Media explained why the Knicks would benefit from adding the NBA champion.
They cited primarily Lowry’s “intangibles” and how he “excels at drawing charges and playing pesky defense” and how that would help “the NBA’s most clutch team even more lethal on the other end of the floor.”
Lowry’s reputation definitely precedes him. The days of him playing at an All-Star level like he did with the Toronto Raptors are very much gone. However, as he declined, he has proven his value. While his stats were decreasing, he helped the Miami Heat reach an NBA Finals as well as two Eastern Conference Finals appearances in 2022 and 2023.
With the Sixers, Lowry’s numbers have declined further. He averages four points, 2.8 assists, and two rebounds while shooting 35.1% from the field and 33.7% from three. However, despite the lower box score numbers, his intangibles are still there, and that could be enough for the Knicks.
Next season, Sixers youngster Jared McCain will return, which could push Lowry out of Philadelphia. The Knicks tried to bring him in last year, and although the former star and champion passed then, that doesn’t mean New York would have the same outcome if they tried again.
