With the 2025-26 NBA season just around the corner, the New York Knicks are still working to configure their roster.
They’ve made three signings in the last 24 hours, bringing in veterans Landry Shamet, Garrison Matthews, and Malcolm Brogdon. None of these veteran minimum deals is guaranteed, which means only one of these players will be staying with the Knicks.
The three players will compete for that last spot in training camp, or New York could make another move to create roster openings ahead of the regular season.
Knicks Could Make a Trade to Keep Both Shamet and Brogdon
SNY Insider Ian Begley reported after the signings that the Knicks could potentially try to keep both veterans, but it would require some roster moves.
“They cannot keep both Brogdon and Shamet, and Brogdon and Shamet obviously play different positions, fill different needs for the Knicks, but unless the Knicks make a trade, trade one of their players on traditional contracts here, they will not have the room to keep both Brogdon and Shamet,” explained Begley.
“We will see who ends up on this roster, who doesn’t end up on this roster, but certainly something to watch there with Shamet and Brogdon and a potential trade.”
If the Knicks are keen on keeping their two newly signed veterans, another player will have to go. It’s possible that second-year point guard Tyler Kolek could get moved in a potential trade, with Brogdon taking over as the full-time second unit floor general.
Pacome Dadiet, New York’s 2024 first-round pick, also could be a trade candidate if they feel Shamet can back up OG Anunoby as a wing off the bench.
Regardless, the Knicks have built themselves quite a deep roster, and these are first-world problems for a team looking to contend for a championship.
